  • Patent number: 7604826
Abstract: The present invention relates to a capsule containing a substance for the preparation of a beverage that is designed to be extracted by injection of a fluid under pressure. The capsule comprises a closed chamber containing the substance with at least part of the closed chamber including a retaining part made of a flexible membrane. One or more raised elements that face the membrane are associated with and forming part of the capsule. These element(s) are used to open the capsule due to a buildup of pressure therein. This rise in pressure causes relative engagement of the raised element(s) with the membrane until the membrane ruptures or is torn to release the formed beverage from the chamber. As the liquid of the beverage does not come into contact with the machine, hygiene is improved and cross-contamination is reduced when preparing a beverage from the capsule.

  • Publication number: 20090211458
Abstract: The invention relates to a capsule for delivering a drink by injecting a pressurized fluid comprising a body (2), an injection wall (3), a chamber (4) containing a bed of food substance to be extracted, means for retaining the internal pressure (5) in the said chamber. The improvement consists in the provision of an injection space (7) allowing a means of injecting fluid in the form of at least one jet of fluid to be introduced through the injection wall and in providing a means (6) for breaking the jet of fluid and distributing the distribution of fluid at a reduced speed across the surface of the bed of substance. These means may adopt various forms such as that of a rigid or flexible perforated wall, or a layer of discrete elements or a spongy layer. Such a capsule improves the flow of liquid extract through the pressure retaining means (5) and improves the extraction conditions.

  • Publication number: 20090047389
Abstract: A sealed capsule for containing an ingredient is provided with at least one essentially rigid inner jet direction-diverting member being arranged close to the inner side of a face of the capsule. The inner jet direction-diverting member is designed to divert the direction of at least a portion of a water jet injected through an opening produced in the face. The invention further proposes the dynamical profiling of inner channels in at least one face of the capsule by pressing the face of the capsule against a profiling member of the beverage production device.

  • Publication number: 20070248734
Abstract: Method of obtaining a frothy drink from a cartridge, the said cartridge being made up of at least one chamber containing at least a preparation for a drink. The method comprises injecting into the said cartridge a predetermined volume of fluid, a first part of which essentially consists of air which is compressed in the cartridge to a pressure lower than the pressure at which the cartridge opens or the drink flows freely through the said cartridge and a second part of which consists of water, or possibly of a mixture of air and water, which is injected after the first part into the cartridge so as to make it possible to obtain the drink by causing the internal pressure to increase until the cartridge opens or the drink flows freely through the cartridge thus allowing the drink to be discharged and froth to be formed.

  • Publication number: 20070185434
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of wetting and/or dissolving a substance contained in a capsule for producing a beverage consisting, by means of a piercing and injection element, in piercing the capsule and injecting a liquid under pressure into the capsule to wet and/or dissolve the substance; the piercing and injection element being arranged so as to inject the liquid into the capsule in the form of at least one thin layer extending in a continuous, divergent and multidirectional manner, covering a spray surface in an arc of a circle inside the capsule. The invention also relates to a device comprising a flow channel and a valve designed to close off the channel in a first position, called the rest position, and to open under the effect of the pressure from the liquid against an elastic element so as to free a passage as a function of the pressure and thus create the thin layer of liquid.
