  • Patent number: 5219018
Abstract: The invention relates to a continuous casting method for producing thixotropic metallic alloys containing degenerated dendrites. It consists of casting the liquid metal in a movable occluded mould consisting of a hot upstream zone produced from insulating material and a cooled downstream zone in which the metal solidifies, while carrying out by means of a sliding magnetic field, obtained by a series of polyphase inductors, an electromagnetic agitation which causes the dendrites formed in the cold zone to pass into the hot zone where they change to nodules by superficial refusion. This invention is particularly applicable to the production of aluminum plates or bars having thixotropic properties.

  • Patent number: 4964455
Abstract: A method is disclosed for making thixotropic metal products by continuous casting by pouring liquid metal into a mold with a movable end and having upstream and downstream portions. The upstream portion has a wall made of a heat insulating material at least at its inner surface to form a hot zone, and the downstream portion has a wall made at least partially of a heat conducting material to form a cold zone. A movement is imparted to the solidifying liquid to cause circulation between the cold zone and the hot zone in order to bring about surface remelting of crystals formed in the cold zone and degeneration of dendrites.

  • Patent number: 4848441
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for adjusting the level of the line of contact between the mold and the free surface of the metal in the vertical continuous casting of products of any cross-section in an ingot-mold, which includes the step of applying to the solidifying metal, by means of an electric circuit surrounding the mold, a periodic magnetic field of variable intensity having a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the mold. According to the invention, the magnetic field applied to the mold is varied over a portion of the periphery of the metal. This can be done by modifying the distance between electric circuit creating the magnetic field and the mold, by changing the vertical positioning of the circuit, or by varying the shape of the profile of the circuit.

  • Patent number: 4837385
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for separating the inclusions contained in a bath of molten metal, by filtration. This process involves applying an electromagnetic force field to the filtering medium. It allows the total number and the size of the inclusions to be reduced greatly so that the products obtained by solidification of such a bath are highly suitable for transformation.
