  • Publication number: 20020091404
Abstract: A laminated ultrasonic waveguide and a method of fabrication thereof which comprises stamping at least two pieces of sheet stock to form stamped parts of the laminated ultrasonic waveguide. The stamped parts are then laminated together to form a laminated ultrasonic waveguide for transferring ultrasonic acoustic energy along a longitudinal axis of the laminated ultrasonic waveguide. In several disclosed embodiments, the laminated ultrasonic waveguide is part of an ultrasonic surgical instrument having an active tip end-effector which is placed in contact with tissue of a patient to couple ultrasonic energy transferred along the laminated ultrasonic waveguide to the tissue. The stamped pieces of sheet stock can also be stamped to form one or more channels extending along the length of the laminated ultrasonic waveguide. The laminated ultrasonic waveguide can also define a connector at a proximal end thereof to transfer ultrasonic energy into the laminated ultrasonic waveguide.

  • Publication number: 20020077644
Abstract: A balanced ultrasonic surgical instrument is described wherein the balanced ultrasonic surgical instrument includes an ultrasonic transmission rod and an ultrasonically actuated blade attached to the distal end of the ultrasonic transmission rod. According to the present invention, the ultrasonically actuated blade includes a treatment portion and a balance portion. The treatment portion has a functional feature such as, for example, a triangular blade which makes the treatment portion asymmetric. The balance portion includes a singular asymmetric balance feature designed and positioned to balance out any undesirable torque generated by the treatment portion. The balance portion further extends generally from a node point on the ultrasonic transmission rod to the proximal end of the treatment portion.

  • Publication number: 20020004665
Abstract: A curved ultrasonic blade including a concave top surface, a convex bottom surface and a central ridge running along the concave top surface is described. In a curved blade according to the present invention the blade has a cross section which is substantially trapezoidal. The blade edges may be sharp or blunt and the convex bottom surface has a width of at least two times the width of the central ridge and, preferably, three times the width of the central ridge. A balanced ultrasonic instrument including a curved blade having a trapezoidal cross section is also described. A balanced ultrasonic surgical instrument according to the present invention includes an ultrasonic transmission rod which is connected to the curved blade by a balance portion which includes first and second balance asymmetries designed to compensate for the imbalances induced by asymmetry of the curved blade.

  • Patent number: 6278218
Abstract: A method of manufacturing high power sandwich type ultrasonic transducers and, more particularly, a new method of tuning high power sandwich type ultrasonic transducers without the need for a trimming process. A method in accordance with the present invention includes the steps of assembling a sandwich type ultrasonic transducer, measuring the resonant frequency of the ultrasonic transducer, and selecting from a plurality of tuning elements, whereby a dimension or material property of a selected tuning element alters the measured resonant frequency of the ultrasonic transducer to a desired resonant frequency after the tuning element is attached to the ultrasonic transducer.

  • Publication number: 20010001123
Abstract: An ultrasonic device with increased efficiency as a result of substantially increased pressure uniformity across individual PZTs and through the PZT stack. Specifically, the PZT stack is uniformly compressed by way of a bolt having a head that has a surface area roughly equal to the surface area of the individual piezoelectric elements. The bolt is further combined with an aft end bell that has a reduced surface contact with the bolt head and a larger surface contact with the adjacent piezoelectric stack.

  • Patent number: 6206844
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an ultrasonic surgical instrument including an improved outer sheath which is removable and which rotateably engages the ultrasonic waveguide to facilitate attachment of the ultrasonic instrument to a handpiece. In particular, in one embodiment of the present invention, an improved sheath includes a first and second sheath pin slots extending from the proximal end of the sheath to first and second sheath pinholes respectively. An ultrasonic surgical instrument according to the present invention further includes a connector pin, the connector pin extending through the first sheath pinhole, a waveguide pinhole and the second sheath pinhole and an attachment hub surrounding the outer sheath, wherein the attachment hub is slideable over the outer sheath. A first pin slot may be positioned on an inner surface of the attachment hub wherein the connector pin engages the first pin slot when the attachment hub is in its proximal most position.
