  • Patent number: 6964753
Abstract: A continuous static polymerization reactor unit for the production of liquid polymers, in particular high viscosity organopolysiloxanes, in a predetermined viscosity range comprises a reactor (1) a supply means (10,25) for supplying monomers and/or oligomers to an inlet means (2), and an outlet means (5). The inlet means (2) is adapted for the introduction of a reaction mixture into a reaction chamber (3), and a means for introducing at least one viscosity controlling agent into the supply means is provided to form a reaction mixture with monomers and/or oligomers (11,13,15,12,14,16). The unit is adapted to maintain the values of temperature and flow rate of the resulting reaction mixture/polymer in the reaction chamber (3) substantially constant.

  • Patent number: 6040412
Abstract: This specification describes and claims a process for preparing chain-extended organopolysiloxanes. The process comprises the steps of: A) mixing organopolysiloxanes having at least one silicon-bonded hydroxyl group per molecule with a polymerization catalyst to form a mixture, B) allowing the mixture of step A to react so as to produce a reaction product comprising polymerized organopolysiloxanes of which some have at least one silicon-bonded hydroxyl group per molecule and C) allowing the silicon-bonded hydroxyl group containing organopolysiloxanes of the reaction product of step B to react with a nitrogen-containing silylating agent capable of chain-extending to produce a chain-extended organopolysiloxane. Preferably the silylating agent is a cyclosilazane. Organopolysiloxanes having terminal groups other than silicon-containing hydroxyl groups and which are capable of equilibrating with the mixture of step A and/or the reaction product of step B may also be introduced prior to step C.

  • Patent number: 5504150
Abstract: Emulsions containing liquid polymers are made by first condensing monomers in a polymerization reactor having an inlet, a reaction chamber, and an outlet. The monomers are mixed with a condensation catalyst, and a pressurized gas forms a foaming mixture. The foaming mixture is fed down the chamber to the outlet while the monomers polymerize in the chamber. Water and a surfactant are then fed to the lower end of the chamber to form a water-in-oil emulsion with the aid of the foaming action in the chamber. A shear device then inverts the water-in-oil emulsion to an oil-in-water emulsion.

  • Patent number: 5456888
Abstract: A continuous static polymerization reactor for the production of liquid polymers comprises an elongated hollow reaction chamber (30) which has a porous wall (31) and a jacket means (40) spaced around the reaction chamber (30), which is provided with means (44) for introducing a fluid through the porous wall (31). The reactor is particularly useful for a process for making liquid polymers by condensing monomers and/or oligomers. It comprising the use of a pressurized gas to cause the reaction mixture to reach a foam consistency. This is beneficial in the condensation polymerization. Feeding a fluid through the porous wall into the reaction chamber avoids build up of the polymer on the wall.

The reactor is particularly useful for a process for making liquid polymers by condensing monomers and/or oligomers. It comprising the use of a pressurized gas to cause the reaction mixture to reach a foam-like consistency. This is beneficial in the condensation polymerization. Feeding a fluid through the porous wall into the reaction chamber avoids build up of the polymer on the wall.
