    Abstract: A 3D scanner and a method of operating same are provided. The scanner comprises a light projector unit for projecting a structured light pattern and a set of cameras. The set of cameras includes one or more rolling shutter cameras for capturing data conveying a set of images having sensor surfaces defining a plurality of pixel lines. One or more processors are provided for sending control signals to the light projector unit to intermittently project the structured light pattern. In particular, the structured light pattern is projected when the individual pixel lines in the plurality of pixel lines are concurrently exposed to light and is otherwise either attenuated or turned off. In some implementations, a rolling shutter geometric camera is included, and the light projector unit includes a light source emits light with wavelengths in a specific range.

The imaging modules include a light projector unit for projecting a structured light pattern onto the surface of the object, at least one camera for capturing image data, and at least one image data compression module that compresses the image data using a nonlinear conversion that compresses a dynamic range of intensity values in the compressed image data such that lower intensity values are amplified and mapped to a larger portion of the compressed dynamic range while amplification of higher intensity values is limited. The computing system controls an exposure setting of the 3D scanner based on background intensity values for images in the compressed image data. Related methods are also described.
