Patent number: 6170772Abstract: A wrapping method comprises the prior stretching of a film wherein the prior stretching of the film advantageously includes a step of paying out the film from a feed reel, a stretching step, and a step of winding the stretched film onto a mandrel or a take-up reel in readiness for subsequent use. The film of the present invention is previously stretched under a large amount of tension, is released, and is then wound under moderate tension, under which the film is allowed to relax. The present invention is applicable to preparing film for wrapping loads that are optionally palletized and suitable for being put into place either manually, or mechanically.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1999Date of Patent: January 9, 2001Assignee: Thimon, S.A.Inventors: Jean-Paul Martin-Cocher, Georges Jaconelli

Patent number: 5967437Abstract: A machine for winding film, a method of manufacturing spools of pre-stretched film, and spools of pre-stretched film obtained as a result, are disclosed. The method of winding spools of pre-stretched stretchable film includes importing oscillation to the film with a component perpendicular to the axis of the film. For example, during pre-stretched and winding of the film on a take-up spool, a feed spool, i.e. a spool from which the stretchable film for stretching is taken, is caused to oscillate, and/or the take-up core is caused to oscillate. This ensures that successive layers of film are offset, in particular at the margins of the film. Spools of film obtained in this way do not have portions of extra thickness and lower tension at the margins as is the case prior art spools of pre-stretched film.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1998Date of Patent: October 19, 1999Assignee: ThimonInventors: Jean Paul Martin-Cocher, Georges Jaconelli

Patent number: 5953888Abstract: The present invention relates to a pre-stretched film, and to apparatus and a method of applying outer packaging to packages and to loads, optimized as a function of the structure and in particular the shape of the package or the load, in particular a palletized load, and also as a function of the transport and handling that the package or the load must be capable of withstanding without the outer packaging being dislocated. According to the invention, a stretchable film is stretched over at least one roller having a diameter that varies along its axis of rotation so as to form parallel longitudinal zones in the film that have different degrees of stretching. These zones make it possible, in particular, to track the external outlines of objects to be packaged and/or to provide locally-reinforced bonding, or on the contrary to present surfaces that are more relaxed. The present invention applies in particular to packaging and grouping together loads that may optionally be palletized.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1997Date of Patent: September 21, 1999Assignee: Thimon, S.A.Inventors: Jean-Paul Martin-Cocher, Jaconelli Georges

Patent number: 5797240Abstract: A method and a machine for wrapping loads of items grouped together in a bundle that may be palletized or otherwise, by means of a stretchable film put into place around the bundle and, where appropriate, a pallet, after the film has been pre-stretched and paid out from a spool or the like on which it is stored in the pre-stretched state with an elongation value of about 150% to 500% and a tension, after relaxation, lying in the range 2 to 7, and preferably in the range 2 to 3 daN/mm.sup.2 of film section per turn.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1995Date of Patent: August 25, 1998Assignee: Newtec InternationalInventors: Jean-Paul Martin-Cocher, Georges Jaconelli

Patent number: 5720153Abstract: The present invention relates mainly to a wrapping method and to apparatus for implementing the method. The invention provides a method of wrapping a palletized load, the method comprising a step of depositing one or more plastic films around the palletized load, thereby covering the palletized load and closing the inlets to the pallet, the method including a step that consists in disengaging permanent passages in the film where it obstructs the inlets of the pallet for passing the forks of handling equipment. The present invention is particularly applicable to wrapping palletized loads. A main application of the present invention lies in wrapping loads that are palletized on standard pallets.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1996Date of Patent: February 24, 1998Assignee: Newtec InternationalInventor: Jean-Paul Martin-Cocher

Patent number: 5634321Abstract: The present invention relates mainly to an optimized method of applying an outer wrapping to a load, in particular a palettized load, and to transporting the load as wrapped by said method.A method of the invention includes the following steps:a) determining the forces that the load must be capable of withstanding and the resulting maximum acceptable deformations;b) selecting a general outer wrapping configuration as a function of the load to be wrapped, the method of transport, of handling, and/or of storage for the load, and also the available wrapping machines; andc) determining the disposition of the film to be implemented using the minimum quantity of film to achieve wrapping having the configuration as determined in step b) and capable of withstanding without dislocation or unacceptable deformation the stresses as determined in step a).Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1995Date of Patent: June 3, 1997Assignee: Newtec InternationalInventors: Jean-Paul Martin-Cocher, Georges Jaconelli

Patent number: 5596866Abstract: A method and a an apparatus for the exterior packaging of a palletized load supported by a platform (2) and by at least two lateral sliding supports (11, 12) contiguous with two longitudinal edges (7) of a lower face (3) of the deck (2) of the palletized load (1)is disclosed. The lower face (3) has two transverse sides (6) for taking up the load by means of a handling device. The method includes a preliminary step of covering the palletized load with a film (20) made of a heat-shrinkable material, followed by a step of heat-shrinking the material. According to the invention, the heat-shrinking step involves, on the one hand, shrinking a return portion (23) of the film beneath the lower faces (9) of the lateral sliding supports (11, 12) and conforming the film (20) along the transverse sides (6) in order to conform the lower edge of the film so as to be substantially level with the platform (2)with is a central region (26).Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1995Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: Newtec InternationalInventors: Jean-Paul Martin-Cocher, Georges Jaconelli
