  • Patent number: 4299926
Abstract: Condensation polymers or addition polymers which contain sterically hindered polyalkylpiperidine groups are proposed as light stabilizers for plastics. The polymers concerned are relatively low-molecular polymers and a difunctional derivatives of a polyalkylpiperidine is additionally used for the manufacture of these. The piperidine radical can be present in the main chain or as a side group of the polymeric stabilizer. Polymeric stabilizers of this type do not tend to migrate out of the plastic or to be removed by extraction; they are therefore very permanent in use.

  • Patent number: 4294963
Abstract: Polyalkylpiperidine derivatives which are unsubstituted in the 1-position of the piperidine ring and in the 4-position are bonded through a heteroatom bridge to an s-triazine radical, can be converted by reaction with a dihalide or a di-, tri- or tetraepoxide into compounds of the formula I ##STR1## wherein n is 2, 3 or 4 and p is 0 or 1. Polymer or oligomer compounds of the formula II ##STR2## wherein n represents the degree of polymerization and E and E' represent end groups, are obtained by reacting a triazine derivative which contains at least two polyalkylpiperidine substituents with dihalides or diepoxides. Both types of compound are stabilizers for polymers, especially against damage by light. They are distinguished by low volatility and a low tendency to migrate, so that they are of special interest for use in thin polymer layers, for example in fibres, sheets or coatings.

  • Patent number: 4234707
Abstract: Blocking of the end groups of condensation and addition polymers which can be used as light stabilizers and in which the recurring structural unit contains a polyalkylpiperidine residue of the formula ##STR1## or is substituted by a polyalkylpiperidine side group of the formula ##STR2## in which R is hydrogen or alkyl having 1-5 C atoms and R' is hydrogen, alkyl having 1-12 C atoms, alkeny having 3-8 C atoms, alkynyl having 3-6 C atoms, aralkyl having 7-12 C atoms, alkanoyl having 1-8 C atoms or alkenoyl having 3-5 C atoms, is effected by adding a monofunctional compound during the preparation of the polymers, or by reacting the polymer, after it has been prepared, with a monofunctional compound. Examples of monofunctional compounds are monocarboxylic acids, monoalcohols, monoamines or monoisocyanates. The polymeric light stabilizers become more stable as a result of the blocking of the end groups.
