  • Patent number: 7452611
Abstract: Describes a photochromic plastic article, e.g., an ophthalmic photochromic article, such as a lens, in which the article includes (1) a polymeric substrate, such as a thermoset or thermoplastic substrate, (2) a photochromic polymeric coating appended to at least one surface of the substrate, the photochromic polymeric coating containing a photochromic amount of at least one organic photochromic material, e.g., spirooxazine, naphthopyran and/or fulgide, and (3) a radiation-cured, acrylate-based film coherently appended to the photochromic coating, the acrylate-based film being (a) resistant to removal by aqueous solutions of inorganic caustic, e.g., potassium hydroxide, (b) compatible with organo silane-containing abrasion-resistant coating, and (c) harder than said photochromic coating. Describes also the aforedescribed photochromic article having an abrasion-resistant coating affixed to the radiation-cured acrylate-based film, e.g.

  • Publication number: 20060093844
Abstract: Described are ungelled coating compositions of photochromic material, precursor materials for a first polymer polymerizable by free-radical initiated polymerization and precursor materials for a second or additional polymer(s) different from the first polymer. When the second polymer is selected from polyurethane, poly(urea-urethane) and mixtures thereof, the precursor materials include at least one blocked polyisocyanate. Also described are methods of making photochromic articles using the ungelled coating compositions and the photochromic articles produced using these methods.

  • Patent number: 6506488
Abstract: Described are articles having an aminoplast resin photochromic coating prepared from an aminoplast resin, components(s) having hydroxyl functional groups and photochromic substances. The coatings exhibit a Fischer microhardness of from 45 to 180 Newtons per mm2 and desirable photochromic properties, i.e., the formation of darker activated colors and faster rates of photochromic activation and fade when irradiated with ultraviolet light. Also described are photochromic aminoplast resin articles.

  • Patent number: 6432544
Abstract: Described are articles having an aminoplast resin photochromic coating prepared from an aminoplast resin, component(s) having at least two different functional groups and photochromic substances.

  • Publication number: 20020009599
Abstract: Described are photochromic polyurethane coatings having improved durability as demonstrated by reduced swelling upon exposure to alcoholic solvents in the Percent Swelling Test. The coatings are prepared using polycarbonate polyols alone or in combination with different polyols as the source of hydroxyl groups. Also described are articles having such coatings. The coatings exhibit a Fischer microhardness of from 50 to 150 Newtons per mm2 and good photochromic properties.

  • Patent number: 6187444
Abstract: Described are photochromic polyurethane coatings that meet commercially acceptable “cosmetic” standards for optical coatings. Also described are articles having such coatings. The coatings exhibit a Fischer microhardness of from 50 to 150 Newtons per mm2 and improved photochromic properties, i.e., the formation of darker activated colors and faster rates of photochromic activation and fade when irradiated with ultraviolet light.
