    Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure generally pertain to systems and methods for performing amplicon rescue multiplex polymerase chain reaction (arm-PCR). In one embodiment, the system comprises a processor and a reader coupled to a control element. The control element is configured to control the operation of the processor and the reader based on a variety of settings. The processor is configured to receive a self-contained cassette for performing PCR amplification of DNA and/or RNA obtained from an organic specimen. The processor engages with the cassette and manipulates reagents within the cassette in order to amplify and detect the DNA from the specimen. The processor also causes the cassette to deposit the DNA on a microarray within the cassette. The reader is configured to receive the cassette after it has been processed by the processor and to capture an image of the microarray for transmission to the control element as test data.

    Abstract: A system for performing a chemical and/or biological process has a pipette for processing material used in the process. The pipette can have a tip that can pierce a sealing material of a chamber and then be placed in contact with the bottom surface of the chamber that is housing a material used in the process. The tip has a plurality of passageways with openings located along the outer perimeter of the tip. The placement of the openings at the outer perimeter permits the tip to be placed on the bottom surface of a chamber such that most of the material in the chamber can be extracted by the pipette. In addition, the placement of the tip on the bottom surface of the chamber with openings along the outer perimeter of the tip permits the pipette to agitate existing material in the chamber when the pipette is providing additional material into the chamber.

    Abstract: A cassette for performing multiplex PCR is described. The cassette allows for the automated amplification and detection of multiple nucleic acid targets while limiting contamination. The device facilitates a two-amplification, two-primer PCR protocol which results in highly specific, highly sensitive and semi-quantitative amplification of multiple nucleic acid targets. The cassette contains a cavity, a base with a plurality of chambers, a movable pipette for the transfer of reagents and a detection area. The cassettes are single use, disposable devices which may be loaded with reagents needed for the detection of multiple targets. The cassettes may be used in a hospital or clinical setting to quickly screen clinical samples and detect the presence of infectious agents.
