Patent number: 10399719Abstract: A system and method for activating a series of article protection features formed in product cartons in which a series of articles have been packaged includes an actuating assembly mounted along a path of travel for the cartons. The actuating assembly will include a series of actuating elements that are selectively moved into engagement with the article protection features of the cartons. The article protection features are urged into the cartons, between the articles therein and into positions engaging and supporting the articles.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2016Date of Patent: September 3, 2019Assignee: Graphic Packaging International, LLCInventors: Jeff A. Disrud, Frank N. Moncrief, Kelly Ziegler

Patent number: 9919823Abstract: A packaging machine is disclosed for packing cartons with beverage cans in two overlaying layers. The packaging machine has a selector flight, a can flight, and a carton flight, all synchronously movable. A single infeed assembly directs first groups of cans into selector bays on the selector flight, sweeps them into adjacent can bays, and directs second groups of cans into the same selector bays, all on the same level. The selector flight and the second groups of cans then ramps up to an elevated level, from where the second groups of cans are swept into the adjacent can bays atop the first groups of cans. The thus staged cans are pushed into open cartons on the carton flight.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2014Date of Patent: March 20, 2018Assignee: Graphic Packaging International, LLCInventor: Jeff A. Patent number: 8893454Abstract: A packaging machine is disclosed for packing cartons with beverage cans in two overlying layers. The thus staged cans are pushed into open cartons on the carton flight.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2011Date of Patent: November 25, 2014Assignee: Graphic Packaging International, Inc.Inventor: Jeff A. Patent number: 8074430Abstract: A twin layer packaging machine is disclosed for packing cartons with articles such as beverage cans in two layers, a top layer overlying a bottom layer. The packaging machine has a selector flight defining selector bays, a can flight defining can bays, and a carton flight transporting cartons to be packed, all synchronously movable with each other. A single infeed assembly at the upstream end of the machine directs first groups of cans into selector bays on the selector flight, sweeps them into adjacent can bays, and directs second groups of cans into the same selector bays, all on the same level. The selector flight and the second groups of cans in its selector bays then ramps up to an elevated level, from where the second groups of cans are swept from the selector bays into the adjacent can bays atop the already loaded first groups of cans. The thus staged twin layer cans are then pushed into open cartons on the carton flight, whereupon the cartons are closed and sealed.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2009Date of Patent: December 13, 2011Assignee: Graphic Packaging International, Inc.Inventor: Jeff A. Patent number: 7793929Abstract: A magazine pressure control is provided with pressure control wheels that are designed to regulate pressure on carton blanks being fed to a folder/gluer in a carton forming operation. These wheels are disposed around the periphery of the carton blank to urge the edges of the cartons forward and to straighten misaligned cartons. A separately controlled motor operates each half of the magazine pressure control. Each motor is controlled by a pressure sensor assembly and regulates the progression of the carton blanks through the magazine pressure control to equalize the pressure around the periphery of the carton blanks as they are presented to the pick face of the folder/gluer.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2008Date of Patent: September 14, 2010Assignee: Graphic Packaging International, Inc.Inventors: Timothy W. Hendricks, Jeff Disrud, Frank Moncrief

Patent number: 7780396Abstract: A system for automatically forming stacks of cartons for feeding a magazine for supplying cartons to a packaging machine includes a primary support on which the stacks of cartons are formed, and a secondary support for temporarily receiving a series of the cartons thereon as a previously formed stack of cartons is removed from the primary support. The stack of cartons collected on the primary support is moved onto a transport conveyor for transport to a loader for the magazine for feeding into the packaging machine.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 2005Date of Patent: August 24, 2010Assignee: Graphic Packaging International, Inc.Inventors: Timothy W. Hendricks, Jeff Disrud, Frank Moncrief

Patent number: 7648322Abstract: A magazine loader for automatically loading stacks of cartons onto a magazine of a mass feeder for supplying cartons to a packaging machine, includes a loader in which stacks of cartons are received and held, and a carriage on which the loader is pivotally mounted. The cartons are received loaded in the loader, after which the loader is pivoted from a loading position to a stacking position. The loader is then moved along a feeder conveyor for the packaging machine toward a magazine or supply of previously stacked cartons, until the stack of cartons is received and stacked against the previously loaded cartons to maintain a supply of cartons for feeding into the packaging machine.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2005Date of Patent: January 19, 2010Assignee: Graphic Packaging International, Inc.Inventors: Frank N. Moncrief, Timothy W. Hendricks, Jeff Disrud

Patent number: 7461838Abstract: An improved segment wheel assembly for an article packaging machine is provided for picking individual carton blanks from a magazine and delivering the carton blanks to a conveyor to be carried to a packaging station of the machine. The segment wheel assembly has a pair of generally cylindrical segment wheels spaced apart from each other in end-to-end relationship. An unobstructed space is defined between the spaced segment wheels and each segment wheel has a generally rectangular cutout with the cutouts being aligned. A pick arm assembly including suction cups is disposed within the unobstructed space. A drive train rotates the segment wheels in unison and, simultaneously, oscillates the suction cup back and forth within the unobstructed space. The suction cup repeatedly grabs single carton blanks from the magazine and pulls them toward the rotating segment wheels, whose cutouts engage each carton blank and urges it toward and into the conveyor.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 2005Date of Patent: December 9, 2008Assignee: Graphic Packaging International, Inc.Inventors: Timothy W.
