  • Patent number: 8769703
Abstract: A computing system using a persistent, unique identifier may be used to authenticate the system that ensures software and configurations of systems are properly licensed while permitting hardware components to be replaced. The persistent, unique system identifier may be coupled to serial numbers or similar hardware identifiers of components within the computing system while permitting some of the hardware components to be deleted and changed. When components that are coupled to the persistent, unique identifier are removed or disabled, a predefined time period is provided to update the coupling of the persistent, unique identifier to alternate hardware component in the system.

  • Patent number: 7734952
Abstract: A method and system for maintaining the execution speed of a multiprocessor computer system includes automatically detecting a change in instruction execution rate in a disabled processor by a threshold amount and determining an amount of change in instruction execution rate to adjust an actual system-level instruction execution rate to approximate a target system-level instruction execution rate. The target system-level execution rate being pre-determined. Thereafter, the method adjusts one or more instruction processor execution rates such that the actual system-level instruction execution rate approximates the target system-level instruction execution rate to overcome the loss of the disabled processor. One embodiment of the invention involves the use of a processor key for licensing of processor resources within the computer system and offers the option of enabling a dynamic processor recovery method as well as an automatic execution rate regulation method.

  • Publication number: 20070266391
Abstract: A computing system having multiple processors in which these processors are configured to support a plurality of workload types may provide processing metering by workload types. In such a system, metering provides a measure of the normalized processing throughput utilized by processing tasks for each workload type supported by the system. This metering measures processing throughput for tasks of any given workload type that is performed by a processor configured to support that workload type as well as tasks of that type which may also be performed on a standard processor.

  • Publication number: 20070256076
Abstract: A computing system having multiple processors in which these processors are configured to support a plurality of workload types may provide processing metering by workload types. In such a system, a server control module provides a mechanism for automatically configuring processor sets for processing tasks of each workload type supported by the system. This various processor sets are uniquely configured to support tasks of any given workload type. Tasks from a particular workload type are assigned to execute on a processor configured to support that workload type. If no processor set for a given workload type is present in a system, a task of that workload type may also be performed on a standard processor.

  • Publication number: 20050138168
Abstract: A system and method for metering usage of a data processing system and scaling system performance is disclosed. In one embodiment, an authorization key is purchased that specifies both a baseline performance level and a ceiling performance level. After the key is installed on the data processing system, the system performance level is monitored and averaged over predetermined time periods. The customer is charged on a “pay-as-you-go” basis for any time periods during which the average performance level exceeds the baseline performance level. Performance of the data processing system is not allowed to exceed the ceiling level obtained with the authorization key. In one embodiment, the baseline level may be set to zero so that all performance consumption is purchased by the customer as it is utilized. A report may be generated that includes data upon which analysis of the measured processor utilization data may be performed.

  • Patent number: 6272560
Abstract: A method and apparatus enables a newly installed peripheral device such as a disk device to be used with a computer system without changing the operating system. The peripheral device is identified as a type which is not recognized by an operating system operating in conjunction with the computer system. A value which identifies at least one logical attribute of said peripheral device is obtained from said peripheral device. A determination is made as to whether the operating system and the peripheral device are compatible based on the logical attribute obtained from the peripheral device. The operating system and the peripheral device communicate if it is determined that the operating system and the peripheral device are compatible (i.e., can operate together).

  • Patent number: 5479612
Abstract: System and method of encouraging computer system customers to purchase licenses before employing certain types of peripheral devices for use with their computer system. The computer system establishes contact with a peripheral device. It then verifies that the peripheral device is supported by the operating system. If the peripheral device is supported, the system determines whether the peripheral device is licensed (and therefore requires a driver license key in order for the peripheral device to be accessed by the system). If the peripheral device requires a driver license, the system determines whether the corresponding driver license key is installed in the keys file of the computer system. If the driver license key is not installed, the system compels (or encourages) installation of the driver license key by (1) displaying a licensing violation message instructing the customer to obtain the proper license; and/or (2) precluding access of the peripheral device by the computer system.
