Abstract: A modular computer system is provided. In one embodiment, the system includes a computer server having a first printed circuit assembly disposed within a first housing and an expansion connector. The computer server is configured to be coupled to a modular expansion unit via the expansion connector to convert the computer server from a base configuration to an expanded configuration. In various embodiments, the expanded configuration may provide additional processing power, additional memory, or the like. A method of assembling a modular computer system is also provided.

Abstract: A cooling fan comprising an outer housing. A motor support is fixed to the outer housing and a motor is mounted to the motor support. A hub is rotatably coupled to the motor and, with the motor support, forms a motor enclosure that substantially surrounds the motor. A plurality of blades extend radially from the hub and are arranged so as to generate a flow of air around the motor enclosure when the blades are rotated. The cooling fan also comprises a motor cooler comprising a flow path through the motor enclosure, wherein the flow path has a first opening and a second opening, wherein the second opening is disposed within an area of lowered downstream pressure so as to develop a differential pressure between the first and second openings and generate a flow of air through the motor enclosure as the motor operates.

Abstract: Systems and methods for implementing thermal load balancing are disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, a thermal load balancing system for a multiprocessor computer having a plurality of processors may comprise a heat sink network having a plurality of local heat sinks. The local heat sinks are thermally coupled to separate processors in the multiprocessor computer. At least one heat pipe thermally couples each of the plurality of local heat sinks in the heat sink network.

Abstract: An air mover comprising a motor and a plurality of fan blades coupled to the motor. The motor is operable to rotate the fan blades about a blade axis in order to generate an airflow. A housing is disposed about said fan blades and defines a free area through which the airflow can travel. A first end of the housing is proximate to said plurality of fan blades. A second end of the housing has a free area that is unevenly distributed about the blade axis.

Abstract: A computer system comprising a plurality of electronic components disposed within a chassis. The electronic components generate a cooling load of at least 50 CFM at 2 inches of water or greater. An air mover is disposed within said chassis and is operable to generate airflow of at least 50 CFM at 2 inches of water or greater. An air distribution system is coupled to the air mover and is operable to distribute the airflow to the plurality of electronic components.
