Patent number: 8509924Abstract: An integrated optimization and control technique performs process control and optimization using stochastic optimization similar to the manner in which biological immune systems work, and thus without the use of historical process models that must be created prior to placing the control and optimization routine in operation within a plant. An integrated optimization and control technique collects various indications of process control states during the on-line operation of the process, and attempts to optimize the process operation by developing a series of sets of process control inputs to be provided to the process, wherein the control inputs may be developed from the stored process control states using an objective function that defines a particular optimality criteria to be used in optimizing the operation of the process.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2010Date of Patent: August 13, 2013Assignee: Emerson Process Management Power & Water Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey J. Grott, Jeffery J. Williams, Konrad Swirski, Tomasz Chomiak, Konrad Wojdan

Patent number: 7856280Abstract: An integrated optimization and control technique performs process control and optimization using stochastic optimization similar to that used in biological immune systems during on-line operation of a process, the technique collects and stores indications of process control states. During steady-state operation, the technique optimizes process operation by developing sets of process control inputs from stored process control states using an objective function that defines an optimality criterion. Moreover, after one or more disturbance inputs experiences a significant change, the technique responds by comparing the changed disturbance inputs to the disturbance inputs of at least some of the stored process control states to determine the stored process control states that are closest to the new process operating condition.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 2006Date of Patent: December 21, 2010Assignee: Emerson Process Management Power & Water Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey J. Publication number: 20080125881Abstract: An integrated optimization and control technique performs process control and optimization using stochastic optimization similar to the manner in which biological immune systems work, and thus without the use of historical process models that must be created prior to placing the control and optimization routine in operation within a plant. In particular, an integrated optimization and control technique collects various indications of process control states during the on-line operation of the process, and stores these process control states within a memory. During steady-state operation of the process, the integrated optimization and control technique attempts to optimize the process operation by developing a series of sets of process control inputs to be provided to the process, wherein the series of process control inputs may be developed from the stored process control states using an objective function that defines a particular optimality criteria to be used in optimizing the operation of the process.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 2, 2006Publication date: May 29, 2008Applicant: EMERSON PROCESS MANAGEMENT POWER & WATER SOLUTIONS, INC.Inventors: Jeffrey J. Patent number: 4843576Abstract: An arrangement for controlling the process temperature in an industrial process involving an extruding operation includes a summing element which sums the difference between the process temperature and a setpoint temperature with the rate of change of the process temperature and conveys this sum to a proportional and integral controller so that the output thereof acts in an inverse manner with the process temperature. This output of the controller is summed with the change of temperature rate which has been fed forward, to generate a demand signal. The demand signal is shaped and compared to a ramp waveform to generate a variable frequencey pulse for controlling a heating and/or cooling device associated with the extruding device. A change of speed rate can also be summed to form the demand signal.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1987Date of Patent: June 27, 1989Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: William J. Smith, Jin Takayama, Frank J. Varisco, Jeffery J. Williams
