  • Patent number: 5978051
Abstract: An image projector is provided with a light source and a light valve positioned downstream of the light source. An optical path is defined between the light source and the light valve. To accommodate various image viewing formats, a plurality of optical integrators is positioned between the light source and the light valve. Each of the plurality of optical integrators is movable laterally of the optical path and is positionable in the optical path. Light from the light source is transmitted to the light valve through the particular optical integrator positioned in the optical path. Each optical integrator is constructed to produce a unique display format for the light transmitted therethrough to the light valve, in order the accommodate different display formats such as standard and letter-box without wasting light.

  • Patent number: 5710668
Abstract: A multi-color optical display system (10) employs a multi-powered reflective combiner (20) that together with a monochromatic or partly color-corrected relay lens (16) longitudinally corrects a multi-colored image. The combiner typically includes two surfaces (82, 90) of different optical powers with a reflective coating (106, 108) on each of the surfaces. The coatings are chosen to each reflect a specific wavelength range of colored light used in the system and to transmit all other wavelengths. The curvature of each surface is dictated by the aberrations in the color image created by the relay lens. Specifically, each surface is positioned so that its focus (86, 94) coincides with the focal point (58, 60) of the corresponding color component in an intermediate image (18) created by the relay lens so that the final virtual image (22) reflected by the combiner is longitudinally color corrected.

  • Patent number: 5327451
Abstract: A laser source arrangement is provided for use in a laser instrument of a kind used to transmit a scan pattern to a target which is spaced from the laser instrument and to detect light reflected from the target. The laser source arrangement preferably comprises a laser diode for producing a laser beam used to form the scan pattern. The laser diode is characterized by astigmatism which is subject to variation with the temperature of the case of the diode. The arrangement further includes drive apparatus for driving the laser diode in a pulsed mode having a duty cycle which reduces the astigmatism and substantially controls the temperature dependence of the astigmatism. Optics are also provided for statically correcting the astigmatism of the laser diode.
