The instruments include a low friction drive mechanism having one or more rolling elements that ride along a helical groove or track in order to transform rotational movement of a drive member into linear shifting of a reducer member that shifts the elongate member. A one-way locking mechanism may be provided to selectively prevent unwanted counter-rotation of the low friction drive mechanism. The one-way locking mechanism may include annular ratchet teeth arranged on the exterior of the drive member and a ratchet pawl located adjacent to the teeth and selectively engageable therewith.

    Abstract: A medical instrument apparatus and method is provided to insert and release medical implants. This invention pertains generally to medical instruments and more specifically to spinal implant insertion instruments for spinal fixation systems. The insertion instrument may provide a positive locking and unlocking actuator, preferably in the form of a lever, which ensures that the pedicle screw and yoke assembly is either mechanically locked to the insertion instrument or unlocked to the insertion instrument. The positive locking and unlocking actuator of the insertion instrument eliminates guesswork for the surgeon because the surgeon can readily know if the pedicle screw and yoke assembly is attached to the insertion instrument or not. Superelastic components may also be included to shift components in a first direction and pull components under superelastic tension in a second direction for increased holding force.

    Abstract: A razor blade protection system includes a body having a top portion and a bottom portion between which the head of a razor blade may be secured, the top portion and bottom portion are biased such that the bias force must be overcome to insert the razor blade between the top portion and bottom portion. A protective material is located within the body such that, when a razor blade is secured between the top portion and bottom portion, the compressive biasing force maintains the protective material in continuous contact with the cutting edge of the razor blade. The protective material may be saturated with a corrosion inhibiting liquid.

    Abstract: Invertebral implants are provided for carrying bone graft material and extruding the bone graft material between the implant and the adjacent vertebral bodies. The implants include first and second implant extrusion members shiftable relative to one another between a pre-implantation configuration having an enlarged cavity for receiving bone graft material therein and an implantation configuration having a smaller cavity. As the first and second implant extrusion members shift during implantation to the implantation configuration bone graft material is extruded from the cavity and into gaps or spaces between the upper and lower vertebral engaging surfaces of the implant and the adjacent vertebral bodies. After extrusion the bone graft material is subjected to spinal loading and stress to encourage strong bone growth therethrough.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a container for use in a closed application system for liquid or granular agricultural treatment agents. The agent is introduced into the container through an inlet opening on the upper surface of the container. Thereafter, a valve is removably mounted to seal the inlet opening and prevent inadvertant discharge of the liquid from the container. Hand grips are provided to manipulate the container, and the container is configured so that it nested or stacked on other similar containers having valves extending from the respective inlet openings when the containers are transported in an upright position. The handgrips are also employed to mount the containers in an inverted position in agricultural application equipment.
