  • Publication number: 20140361778
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring spontaneous potential (SP) of an earth formation includes a downhole tool that is moveable within a borehole by conveyance means. A portion of the conveyance means produces a reference DC potential signal. The tool includes a measurement electrode that produces a potential signal representative of SP of the earth formation. The tool also includes circuitry that measures a differential DC potential signal between the potential signal produced by the measurement electrode and the reference DC potential signal. SP data that characterizes SP of the earth formation is generated based upon the output of such circuitry. In one embodiment for a while-drilling tool, the conveyance means and tool are realized by a drill string with an insulative sleeve that supports the measurement electrode and electrically isolates the measurement electrode from the drill string. Other embodiments for while-drilling tools and tools for tough logging conditions are also described.

  • Patent number: 7703517
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for sampling fluid from a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore are provided. The subterranean formation has clean formation fluid therein, and the wellbore has a contaminated fluid therein extending into an invaded zone about the wellbore. A shaft is extended from a housing and positioned in a perforation in a sidewall of the wellbore. At least one flowline extends through the shaft and into the housing. The flowline(s) are adapted to receive downhole fluids through the perforation. At least one fluid restrictor, such as a packer, injection fluid or flow inhibitor, may be used to isolate at least a portion of the perforation whereby contaminated fluid is prevented from entering the isolated portion of the perforation. At least one pump selectively draws fluid into the flowline(s).

  • Patent number: 7586310
Abstract: Logging-while-drilling apparatus and methodologies for measuring streaming potential in an earth formation are provided. The apparatus and methodologies can be utilized to find information relevant to the drilling operations. In particular, since the streaming potential measurement relates directly to fluid flow, the streaming potential measurements can be used to track flow of fluids in the formation. In turn, this information may be used to find information relevant to the drilling operations, such as under-balanced drilling conditions, abnormal formation pressures, open fractures, the permeability of the formation, and formation pressure.

  • Publication number: 20080111064
Abstract: A method for determining a property of earth formations surrounding a borehole, including the following steps: isolating a region of the borehole, and obtaining a sample of borehole fluid from the isolated region; and implementing measurements, dowhole, of the Raman scattering of electromagnetic energy directed at the fluid sample; the property of the earth formations being determinable from the measurements. In a disclosed embodiment, the steps of isolating a region of the borehole and obtaining a sample of borehole fluid from the isolated region include: providing a logging device in the borehole in sealing engagement with the isolated region, causing formation fluid from the isolated region to flow in a flow line of the logging device, and providing a measurement cell in the logging device which receives the sample of formation fluid via the flow line.

  • Publication number: 20080110253
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring a substance in formations surrounding an earth borehole being drilled with a drill bit at the end of a drill string, using drilling fluid that flows downward through the drill string, exits through the drill bit entrained with drilled earth formation cuttings, and returns toward the earth's surface in the annulus between the drill string and the borehole, the method including the following steps: waiting for any of the substance that is dissolved in the drilling fluid to be substantially in equilibrium with any of the substance in the earth formation cuttings; and then measuring, downhole, the substance dissolved in the drilling fluid.
