Patent number: 10295815Abstract: Various examples are provided related to imaging with augmented stereoscopic microscopes. In one example, an augmented stereoscopic microscope includes an objective lens that can simultaneously receive near infrared (NIR) images and visible bright-field images of an examined object and an augmentation module. The augmentation module can separate the NIR images from the visible bright-field images for processing by an image processing unit to produce synthetic images using the NIR images and combine the synthetic images with the visible bright-field images to form co-registered augmented images that are directed to an eyepiece of the augmented stereoscopic microscope. In another example, a method includes obtaining a NIR image of an examined object; generating a synthetic image using the NIR image; combining the synthetic image with a real-time visual image of the examined object to form an augmented image; and directing the augmented image to an eyepiece of an augmented stereoscopic microscope.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2016Date of Patent: May 21, 2019Assignee: Arizona Board of Regents on Behalf of the University of ArizonaInventors: Marek Romanowski, Jeffrey Watson, Christian Gainer

Patent number: 10206564Abstract: A dental instrument system has an optical component with a mirror for the dental practitioner to view a patient's mouth. A light source and an airflow source have a plurality of output levels that are controlled by a user input on the handle, such as a single button. The output levels of the light and airflow are controlled by a single or double click, wherein a single click increases the output level of the airflow and a double click increases the output level of the light, for example. The light source illuminates the mirror and the airflow source produces airflow over the mirror to remove debris and bodily fluid. A clearing flow of air may be initiated by holding the single button down on the handle and release of the button may return the airflow to the previous level.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2018Date of Patent: February 19, 2019Assignee: STAYCLEAR DENTAL MIRROR LLCInventors: Jeffrey A Watson, James L Manniso, Mark L Manniso, James Eldon

Patent number: 9974433Abstract: A dental mirror instrument has a light waveguide and an airflow conduit that extend along the length of an elongated member to a mirror portion. An airflow exiting from the airflow conduit may be directed over the mirror surface to remove fluids and debris. Light from a light source is transmitted along the light waveguide and is reflected off of a back-side of a land portion through a Fresnel lens to produce a task light. A mirror may have a hydrophobic surface and this surface may have raised portions or a patterned surface that further enhances the removal of fluids or debris. The optical component of the dental instrument may be detachable to a source component and may be disposable. A flexible connector may be coupled with the source component to provide an airflow to the airflow conduit and/or electrical power to the light source.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2017Date of Patent: May 22, 2018Assignee: STAYCLEAR DENTAL MIRROR LLCInventors: Jeffrey A Watson, James L Manniso, Mark L Manniso, David D McClanahan, James Eldon

Publication number: 20070224571Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a light device. The light device may include a mirror and comprises a handle having a longitudinal axis, a mirror attached to the handle and arranged at an angle from the longitudinal axis, a light source inside the handle, and a light waveguide adjacent to the light source. The waveguide comprises an internal reflector, and the reflector reflects substantially all of the light from the light waveguide. In one embodiment, an annular air flow substantially aligned with a longitudinal axis of the mirror cools the apparatus, including the light source. One embodiment of the light mirror keeps the reflective surface of the mirror free of debris, water, restorative materials, tooth structure, and aluminum oxide powder. Thus, the operator may continue to work without the constant cleaning of the mirror surface associated with conventional mirrors. Cleaning the mirror during a procedure can be time-consuming and counter-productive.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 24, 2006Publication date: September 27, 2007Inventor: Jeffrey Watson
