  • Publication number: 20070134490
Abstract: An aqueous glass fiber sizing composition that includes a polymeric film forming component, at least one silane coupling agent, and one or more lubricants is provided. The polymeric film forming component of the sizing composition includes a silanated polyvinyl acetate, an epoxidized polyvinyl acetate, and a modified epoxy emulsion. In preferred embodiments, the film formers are present in the sizing composition in ratios of 70:25:5, 50:25:25, or 63:18:18 of silanated polyvinyl acetate, epoxidized polyvinyl acetate, and modified epoxy emulsion respectively. Fibers sized with the sizing composition in a sheet molding compound process have improved wet-out characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20070082199
Abstract: The present invention relates to fiber-size compositions for coating glass or other reinforcing fiber materials that are used in the manufacturing of composites. The fiber-size composition contains at least about 4% by weight of a polyvinylpyrrolidone film former, at least one lubricant and a coupling agent. The sizing composition gives the fibers desirable properties such as high strength, improved flexibility, fuzz formation resistance, and fiber smoothness and softness.

  • Publication number: 20060204763
Abstract: A sizing composition containing an epoxy film former, a urethane film former, a silane package that includes an aminosilane coupling agent and an epoxy silane coupling agent, a cationic lubricant, a non-ionic lubricant, an antistatic agent, and at least one acid is provided. The epoxy resin emulsion includes a low molecular weight liquid epoxy resin and one or more surfactants. The epoxy resin preferably has an epoxy equivalent weight from 185-192. The sizing composition may optionally contain a methacryloxy silane. The sizing composition may be used to size glass fibers used in filament winding applications to form reinforced composite articles with improved mechanical properties, wet tensile properties, improved resistance to cracking, and improved processing characteristics.

The epoxy resin emulsion includes a low molecular weight liquid epoxy resin and one or more surfactants. The epoxy resin preferably has an epoxy equivalent weight of from about 185 to about 192. The sizing composition may optionally contain polyurethane or epoxy/polyurethane film former. The sizing composition may be used to size glass fibers used in filament winding applications to form reinforced composite articles with improved mechanical properties, wet tensile properties, improved resistance to cracking, and improved processing characteristics. The sizing composition also provides improved processing parameters such as low fuzz and reduced drag.
