  • Patent number: 7594764
Abstract: A field-installable fusion spliced optical fiber connector including a ferrule, a fiber stub, a splice cover defining a longitudinal passage therethrough, a crimp body coupled to the splice cover, a biasing spring and a connector housing. A ferrule handling block is used for handling the ferrule during connector assembly and a splice cover handling block is used for handling the crimp body, the splice cover and the spring during connector assembly. A fusion splice point of the fiber optic stub and a field fiber is positioned within the longitudinal passage of the splice cover. A method for assembling a field-installable fusion spliced optical fiber connector.

  • Publication number: 20080085090
Abstract: An improved mechanical crimp provides increased fiber retention, while reducing the force required to form the crimp so that the crimp can be formed using a compact crimp mechanism disposed on a handheld installation tool. The crimp includes a deformable crimp tube and an optical fiber disposed within the crimp tube. A radial cross section of the crimp defines a plurality of alternating concave and convex outer surfaces. The crimp mechanism includes a base plate and a pair of crimp arms movably mounted on the base plate such that the crimp arms define a crimp area. The crimp mechanism further comprises an eccentric engaging at least one of the crimp arms and movably mounted on the base plate between a first position wherein the crimp arms are spaced apart at the crimp area and a second position wherein the crimp arms are not spaced apart at the crimp area.

  • Patent number: 6379054
Abstract: A multifiber connector is provided according to one embodiment which includes a multifiber ferrule, splice components and a crimp tube that defines a lengthwise extending passageway having a lateral cross-sectional shape that is generally oval for receiving and maintaining a plurality of optical fibers in a lateral side-by-side relationship. The crimp tube therefore provides the optical fibers to the splice components in an aligned and properly spaced manner for alignment and optical interconnection with respective optical fiber stubs. According to another embodiment, a fiber optic connector is provided that includes a ferrule, mechanical splice components, an associated cam member for actuating the mechanical splice components and means for controlling the position of the cam member relative to the mechanical splice components such that the cam member can be precisely moved from a first unactuated position to a second actuated position.
