Publication number: 20170057450Abstract: Airbag cushion assemblies comprising cushion orientation features and related methods. Some embodiments may comprise an airbag cushion comprising a throat region comprising an inflator opening. An inflator comprising an inflator collar may be coupled with the airbag cushion. The inflator collar may comprise a non-circular shape. The assembly may further comprise an inflator coupling member coupled with the airbag cushion at the inflator opening. The inflator coupling member may similarly comprise a non-circular opening configured to be aligned with the inflator opening and to mate with the non-circular shape of the inflator collar so as to prevent the inflator from being coupled with the airbag cushion in a non-desired rotational orientation.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 24, 2015Publication date: March 2, 2017Inventors: Jeffrey D. Williams, Derrick R. Staheli, Mark S. Hatfield

Patent number: 9440614Abstract: An airbag module assembly includes a module housing that defines a storage chamber. A thrust neutral inflator device is at least in part disposed within the storage chamber. The inflator device releases airbag inflation gas within the storage chamber in a cross-car manner. In specific embodiments, the cross-car release of the airbag inflation gas involves substantially all the airbag inflation gas being released at an angle of no more than ±60° and preferably at an angle of no more than ±50° from horizontal when viewed in a top planar view of the inflator device disposed within the housing.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2015Date of Patent: September 13, 2016Assignee: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey D. Williams

Publication number: 20160228662Abstract: A method of sealing a trachea is provided that includes inserting a tracheal tube having an inflatable cuff made of a compliant material into a trachea. The method includes inflating the inflatable cuff with a fluid to a first pressure that exceeds a second pressure necessary to create a seal between the inflatable cuff and the tracheal wall. The method includes deflating the inflatable cuff by releasing a first pressure to allow the fluid to flow out of the inflatable cuff without applying vacuum pressure to the fluid while evaluating a rate of change of pressure of the fluid in the inflatable cuff. The method includes identifying a variance in the rate of change of pressure corresponding to a third pressure at which the inflatable cuff separates from the tracheal wall, determining the second pressure by analyzing the third pressure, and reinflating the inflatable cuff to the second pressure.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 9, 2016Publication date: August 11, 2016Inventors: Steven L. Pendleton, Jeffrey D. Williams, Gary L. Neff

Patent number: 9150189Abstract: Airbag assemblies and active vents for airbag assemblies are disclosed. An airbag assembly may include an airbag cushion, an active vent having an aperture and a patch configured to plug the aperture, a depth-delimiting tether, a cross tether, and a control tether. The control tether may be coupled to the patch and the depth-delimiting tether. The depth-delimiting tether and the control tether may be drawn taut as the airbag cushion expands during deployment to draw the patch toward the aperture from a first position that allows unobstructed venting to a second position that obstructs venting through the aperture. The depth-delimiting tether and the control tether can be in or transition to a slack state due to occupant impact with the airbag cushion. These tethers may also be in a slack state during the early stage of deployment.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2014Date of Patent: October 6, 2015Assignee: AUTOLIV ASP, INC.Inventors: Ryan D. Nelson, Jeffrey D. Williams, Patrick Jamison, Kent Potter

Patent number: 9108590Abstract: Airbag assemblies and active vents for airbag assemblies are disclosed. An airbag assembly can include an airbag cushion that defines an inflatable chamber and an active vent that comprises an aperture and a patch configured to plug the aperture. A first control tether is coupled to the patch and coupled to the airbag cushion. The first control tether is drawn taut as the cushion expands during deployment to draw the patch toward the aperture from a first position that allows unobstructed venting through the aperture to a second position that obstructs venting through the aperture. The first control tether, or a second control tether, is configured to be drawn taut to close the active vent. Responsive to impact with the airbag cushion, a control tether is configured to slacken to open the active vent.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2014Date of Patent: August 18, 2015Assignee: AUTOLIV ASP, INC.Inventor: Jeffrey D. Patent number: 9016721Abstract: A front airbag assembly deployable from a steering wheel or instrument panel of a vehicle. The airbag assembly includes an airbag cushion and an outer panel that is coupled to the airbag cushion to form a channel. The venting capacity of some airbag assemblies can be modulated without input from an electrical sensor. In some circumstances, the venting capacity of the airbag assembly can vary based on whether and where a vehicle occupant strikes the outer panel of the airbag assembly.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2014Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventors: Kent Potter, Jeffrey D. Publication number: 20140172118Abstract: One aspect provides a composition including triacetin, dimethyl sulfoxide and a bioactive. In one embodiment, the composition also includes a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Another aspect provides implantable medical devices including an elutable bioactive, triacetin and dimethyl sulfoxide. In certain embodiments, the combination of triacetin and dimethyl sulfoxide acts as a permeation enhancing agent by allowing the delivery of an increased amount of the bioactive to the tissue of a human or veterinary patient. Another aspect provides methods of delivering the bioactive to the tissue of the patient, including the step of administrating the composition to the patient or implanting the device within the patient.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2013Publication date: June 19, 2014Applicant: Cook Medical Technologies LLCInventors: Steven L. Patent number: 8714595Abstract: Seat belt systems and inflatable airbags can be used to mitigate the potential for injury to an occupant's neck. The seat belt systems provide for moderating the seat belt loads acting on the occupant to allow an improved synchronization of the occupant torso and head rebound timing, which in turn limits head and torso differential loading (frontal whiplash) and therefore occupant neck loads and neck, based on the position of the occupant, loads on the seatbelt, or a predetermined time in the crash event. Airbags are also provided with a sloped impact face. Additionally, airbags are also provided with a relatively flat top portion.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2010Date of Patent: May 6, 2014Assignee: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventors: Paul Edward Heasman, Bin Wang, Patrick Dee Jamison, Jeffrey D. Patent number: 8646808Abstract: An inflatable airbag assembly can include an airbag cushion and a vent tube having an aperture. Portions of one or more straps can be attached to opposite sides of the vent tube, and a release mechanism can selectively retain the one or more straps. Upon deployment of the airbag cushion while the release mechanism retains the one or more straps, the one or more straps can urge the opposite sides of the vent tube toward each other to assist in closing the aperture of the vent tube.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2012Date of Patent: February 11, 2014Assignee: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey D. Patent number: 8371612Abstract: Lateral and longitudinal internal tethers can be used to restrict an inflatable airbag to a predetermined shape when inflated. A longitudinal tether extends from a rear portion or throat portion of the airbag to a front face. The portion of the front face that cushions an occupant can have a concave or planar shape, depending on the lengths of the lateral and/or longitudinal tethers.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2009Date of Patent: February 12, 2013Assignee: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey D.
