Patent number: 8840114Abstract: An assembly, for example in a gas turbine engine, includes a rotatable component supported by a bearing in a support structure. A sealing arrangement includes a non-rotating sealing ring which makes sealing contact with sealing features on the rotatable component. The non-rotating sealing ring is radially displaceable with respect to the support structure by means of ribs which engage axially facing support faces of the support structure. The non-rotating sealing ring is radially located by an outer, non-rotating, race of the bearing, by means of a locating surface on a locating body of the non-rotating sealing ring. As a result of this arrangement, the running clearance at the sealing arrangement can be maintained, despite radial displacement of the rotatable component with respect to the support structure, and despite thermal and mechanical deflections of the support structure.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2012Date of Patent: September 23, 2014Assignee: Rolls-Royce PLCInventors: Jeffrey A. Dixon, Kenneth F. Udall, Richard Nicholson

Publication number: 20110193293Abstract: A seal arrangement provided between a static component and a rotating component arranged for rotation about a rotational axis. The arrangement preferably takes the form of an interstage seal for a gas turbine engine, including: first and second seal members carried by respective said components and arranged concentrically about said rotational axis. The first seal member has a plurality of radially directed seal fins extending towards the second member and a substantially radially directed flow outlet configured to direct a flow of cooling air through the first member. In one aspect of the invention, the second member has a radial projection at one end of its axial length, the projection extending towards the first member at a position spaced axially between the flow outlet and said seal fins. In another aspect of the invention, the flow outlet is axially adjacent a seal fin which is configured so as to be generally concave towards the flow outlet.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 4, 2011Publication date: August 11, 2011Applicant: ROLLS-ROYCE PLCInventors: Dimitri D.V. Publication number: 20070217904Abstract: It is known there is ingestion of hot gas flow 35 from an annular flow 36 in gas turbine engines. This flow 35 is prevented from attaching to the disc by coolant flow 32 passing through gaps in lock plates 28, 29 by creation of a barrier layer. In order to regulate and enhance this effect spacer protrusions 31 are provided between ends of lock plates 28, 29. In such circumstances the gap 30 is controlled and therefore the rate of leakage flow 32 regulated for best cooling effect. This cooling effect and cooling flow 32 can be further enhanced by providing chutes 39 for presentation of the coolant flow 32.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 14, 2006Publication date: September 20, 2007Inventors: Jeffrey Dixon, Ivan Brunton, Timothy Scanlon, Guy Snowsill

Publication number: 20060188377Abstract: In gas turbine engines it is found that leaked coolant flow through the lock plates 28, 29, 50, 60 can be used to insulate the rotor surfaces 33, 34 from the effects of hot gas ingestion. In order to enhance this effect chutes 39, 59, 69 are provided to guide the leakage airflow adjacent to the lock plate such that the ingested hot gas flow is prevented from coming into contact with the surfaces of the lock plate and other cavity surfaces 33, 34 to improve cooling effect. The chutes 39, 59, 69 create apertures 40, 53 which can be of dimensions to ensure that there is a high ratio between width and depth of the coolant flow 32 again facilitating heat exchange and cooling efficiency.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 7, 2006Publication date: August 24, 2006Inventors: Jeffrey Dixon, Ivan Brunton, Timothy Scanlon, Guy Snowsill

Publication number: 20050045241Abstract: A pigtailing machine includes a B forming head and a support pedestal secured to a cassette base. The cassette base is located upon a base which mounts the A forming head to provide for a relatively quick changeover should another double pigtail coil spring need be manufactured. By fixing the forming head and the support pedestal to the cassette base alignment and proper manufacture of the spring is assured. Alternatively, the A forming head is also mounted to the cassette base.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 28, 2003Publication date: March 3, 2005Inventors: Jeffrey Dixon, Wayne Frederick Couch, Martin Seeds, Thomas Sine, Oscar Gaetan, Terrence Nova
