  • Publication number: 20140318410
Abstract: A locomotive includes a plurality of axles and a plurality of pairs of wheels, each pair of wheels being connected to one of said axles. The locomotive also includes a plurality of traction motors, each traction motor operably attached to at least one of the axles. The locomotive includes a power system including at least one power module, the power system being configured to provide power to the traction motors. The locomotive includes a controller configured to receive a control signal indicative of a locomotive powering mode and determine a number of power modules operably connected to the power system and, based on the number of power modules operably connected to the power system and the control signal, send a command signal to the power system for operating the power system.

  • Patent number: 7952306
Abstract: A method of operating a power system is provided. The method may include running one or more of a plurality of generator units that each include a power source, a first electric generator, and a second electric generator. Additionally, the method may include supplying electricity from one or more of the first electric generators of the one or more running generator units to a first set of one or more electric power loads. The method may also include supplying electricity from one or more of the second electric generators of the one or more running generator units to a second set of one or more electric power loads.

  • Patent number: 7893636
Abstract: A mobile machine may include one or more generator units, a plurality of electric propulsion motors, and a power-transfer system operable to transfer electricity from one or more of the generator units to one or more of the electric propulsion motors. The mobile machine may also include power-system controls that control the connection of the one or more electric propulsion motors to the power-transfer system. The power-system controls may selectively use a first motor-connection strategy for controlling when one or more groups of the electric propulsion motors are connected to the power-transfer system in series, and the power-system controls may selectively use a second motor-connection strategy for controlling when one or more groups of the electric propulsion motors are connected to the power-transfer system in series.

Inventors: Kevin A. Lantz, Jeffrey Holt Wright, Roy Christopher Fonseca
  • Patent number: 7876061
Abstract: A method of operating a power system is provided, the power system having power-system controls. The method may include automatically setting a priority ranking for a plurality of generator units of the power system with the power-system controls based at least in part on an operating parameter of each generator unit indicative of a quantity of work done by the generator unit. The method may also include automatically controlling which of the generator units run with the power-system controls based at least in part on the priority ranking of the generator units.
