Patent number: 10487566Abstract: A system for transferring torque with zero lash from a driver to a driven object is provided. The system includes a shaft disposed about a rotational axis and a hub defining a bore that receives the shaft. The shaft and hub are each configured for coupling to one of the driver and driven object. The shaft defines a flat on a radially outer surface and the hub defines a flat on a radially inner surface opposing the flat in the shaft. In one embodiment, the shaft includes a threaded bore and the hub includes an aligned through bore. Rotation of a threaded fastener in the bores draws the flat into engagement. In another embodiment, the hub includes a threaded through bore. Rotation of a fastener extending through the bore and engaging the shaft diametrically opposite the flats urges the flats into engagement.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2017Date of Patent: November 26, 2019Assignee: Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLCInventors: Mark H. Sciulli, Jeffrey J. Krause, Timothy J. Beckwith, Thomas W. Grieve, John J. Drabczyk, William A. Singleton, Dustin Carpenter, Cody Scibetta

Patent number: 8499663Abstract: A braking assembly includes a depressible brake pedal. The brake pedal remains in a neutral position when not depressed. A link arm is mechanically linked with the brake pedal. The link arm moves as a function of a position of the brake pedal. A bell crank is mechanically linked with the link arm. The bell crank moves as a function of a position of the link arm. A stop member moves with the bell crank. The stop member abuts against the link arm to prevent the brake pedal from over-travelling beyond a predetermined distance past the neutral position after the depressed brake pedal is released.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2010Date of Patent: August 6, 2013Assignee: Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLCInventors: Duane R. Johnson, Jeffrey J. Krause, Mark H. Sciulli

Patent number: 6028862Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for facilitating high bandwidth transmissions of data through a computer network. The invention uses communications through a routed network, such as the Internet, to establish a communication pathway through a connection-oriented network, such as an ATM or a frame relay network. This technique effectively exploits the universal addressing structure of routed networks, such as the Internet, to establish high bandwidth connections through connect-oriented networks. The present invention also facilitates selection of a connection-oriented network for data transmissions from a plurality of connection-oriented networks based upon parameters such as availability and costs. One embodiment of the present invention facilitates connections through mixed connection-oriented and routed networks, as well as through multicast networks. Another embodiment multiplexes several flows of data into a single connection through a connection-oriented network.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1997Date of Patent: February 22, 2000Assignee: 3Com CorporationInventors: Steven P. Patent number: 5242215Abstract: Two different types of converter boxes (38, 84) provide the required interface for transmitting service brake control signals from the tractor unit (12) of a tractor-trailer combination vehicle to the trailer unit (16) thereof in which the tractor unit (17) and trailer unit (16) are provided with dissimilar braking systems. One type of converter box (38) provides the interface between a tractor (12) equipped with an electropneumatic braking system in which service brake applications are controlled by electrical signals and a conventional trailer (16) in which service brakes are controlled by pneumatic signals. The other type of converter box (84) provides the required interface between a tractor (12) which has service brakes controlled by conventional pneumatic signals and a trailer unit (16) which is provided with and electropneumatic braking system in which service brake applications are controlled by electrical signals.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1991Date of Patent: September 7, 1993Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey J. Krause

Patent number: 5154203Abstract: A proportional modulator includes valve elements actuated by a proportional solenoid that controls communications between an inlet port, an outlet port, and an exhaust port. The pressure level at the outlet port is controlled to vary directly with the current applied to the coil of the solenoid controlling the valve elements.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1990Date of Patent: October 13, 1992Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey J. Krause, Paul W. Wozniak, Ronald E. Squires

Patent number: 5061015Abstract: An electropneumatic subsystem of a vehicle compressed air braking system controls communication within the trailer control line, the trailer supply line, and the tractor spring brake delivery line. A valve operated by pilot pressure is installed in the trailer control line, and responds to the pressure level in the trailer supply line to open or close the trailer control line in accordance therewith, thereby providing a tractor protection function. A solenoid valve in the trailer supply line is actuated by an electronic control unit to open and close the trailer supply line to thereby perform a trailer spring brake control function and tractor protection function.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1990Date of Patent: October 29, 1991Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventors: Kenneth L. Cramer, Jeffrey J. Krause

Patent number: 4918688Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically and dynamically providing wiring connections at a central location coupled via ordinary phone lines to a plurality of work stations including a master work station. A central hub couples to a plurality of two wire telephone lines, each of which is coupled to an individual work station. The hub includes circuitry for monitoring transmissions to determine which of the work stations is the master. A receiver coupled to the master work station is coupled to transmitters to each of the other work stations. Receivers coupled to the remaining work stations are in turn coupled to a transmitter to the master work station.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1986Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Assignees: Convergent Technologies, Inc., David Systems, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey J. Patent number: 4842532Abstract: An electrical connector for connecting the cables interconnecting the tractor and trailer portion of a combination vehicle includes axially offset portions, each of which carries a set of electrical conductors. The conductors in one of the portions provide the standard electrical connections between the portions of the vehicle for tail lights, turn signals, etc. Conductors in the other portion provide the connections for an electropneumatic actuated braking system. The offset portions are designed so that the portion carrying the connections for the tail lights, stop lights, turn signals, etc are compatible with existing connectors so that a portion of the vehicle equipped with an electropneumatic system may be used with another portion of the vehicle which is not equipped with an electropneumatic braking system.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1987Date of Patent: June 27, 1989Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey J. Krause

Patent number: 4749238Abstract: An electronically controlled fluid pressure braking system for a heavy duty vehicle includes an operator controlled mechanism which generates independent brake pressure command signals, each of which are transmitted to separate auxiliary controllers. Each of the controllers transmits its command signal to the other auxiliary controllers and also to a master control unit. The master control unit sorts between the command signals and generates a preliminary brake pressure request signal which is transmitted back to each of the auxiliary controllers. Each of the auxiliary controllers then examines the brake pressure request signal received from the master controller and actuates the corresponding vehicle brakes if the pressure request signal is within normal limits. If the signal is not within normal limits, each of the auxiliary controllers is capable of generating a brake pressure request signal independently of the master control unit.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1987Date of Patent: June 7, 1988Assignee: Allied CorporationInventors: William A. Singleton, Merlyn L. Hutchins, Jeffrey J. Krause, Lenora A. Bisacquino, Patrick J. Vandemotter, Gary E. Budinger, Peter F. Gibbons, Glenn S. Bowker
