Patent number: 10561433Abstract: An instrument that includes an outer member, an inner member, and a jaw assembly. The inner member includes a first arm and a second arm. The jaw assembly includes a first jaw and a second jaw. The first jaw is connected to the first arm at a first pivot joint and to the outer member at a second pivot joint. The second jaw is connected to the second arm at a third pivot joint and to the outer member at a fourth pivot joint. The inner member is adapted to be moved distally relative to the outer member so that the first jaw pivots about the second pivot joint towards the second jaw and the second jaw pivots about the fourth pivot joint towards the first jaw thus moving the jaw assembly from the open position towards the closed position.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2017Date of Patent: February 18, 2020Assignee: Gyrus Acmi, Inc.Inventors: Kester J. The jaw assembly is moveable between an open position and a closed position. The web is adapted to block an anatomical feature from extending beyond a proximal end of a gripping section of the jaw assembly. The web remains generally stationary relative to the handpiece when the jaw assembly is moved between an open position and a closed position.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 27, 2019Publication date: January 23, 2020Inventors: Jeffrey J. Nelson, Zane R. Ward, Laura B. Eliason

Publication number: 20200008829Abstract: The teachings herein provide an instrument comprising a forceps. The forceps comprise a hand piece; a tubular member connected to the hand piece; and a jaw assembly connected to the hand piece. The jaw assembly includes a first jaw element and a second jaw element. The first jaw element includes a gripping section and a flexing section. The flexing section includes an arcuate section. The second jaw element opposes the first jaw element and includes a gripping section. The tubular member is moveable onto the arcuate section of the first jaw element so that the flexing section of the first jaw element is flexed and the jaw assembly is moved into a closed position. The first jaw element, the second jaw element, or both include a stiffening spine so that the jaw assembly is substantially rigid in the closed position.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 17, 2019Publication date: January 9, 2020Inventors: Nikhil M. Murdeshwar, John R. Mensch, Zane R. Ward, Kester J. Batchelor, Richard A. Thompson, II, Evan M. Leingang, Jeffrey J. Nelson

Publication number: 20180132889Abstract: Featured is a surgical instrument including a rotating cutting implement and a heat transfer mechanism configured to absorb heat energy during the use of such a rotating cutting implement. The heat transfer mechanism is configured so the absorbed heat energy is communicated to an external heat sink. Such a heat transfer mechanism includes a heat pipe, e.g., a scintered or wick type heat pipe. The heat energy is absorbed at one end of the heat pipe to minimize the potential for damage to the tissue and the like at and/or about the surgical site. Also featured are a surgical apparatus embodying such a surgical instrument and surgical or medical methods or procedures for manipulating, rotatably cutting, grinding, abrading or debriding tissue, bone or other structures or components of a mammalian body using such surgical instruments or surgical apparatus.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 16, 2018Publication date: May 17, 2018Inventors: Kester J. Patent number: 9198719Abstract: Electrosurgical fibroid ablation systems and methods utilize a probe having at least two electrodes to perform bipolar ablation. The probe is inserted into a uterine fibroid so as to enter the fibroid along the major-axis direction of an ellipsoidal fibroid (a direction that is substantially parallel to the uterine wall). Inserting the probe in this direction facilitates ablation of the fibroid with a single probe penetration because the area of ablation tends to progress within a volume having an ellipsoidal shape that is aligned with the ellipsoidal shape of the fibroid. Furthermore, any scar left by the procedure tends to extend in a direction that is parallel to the uterine wall, and thus is less likely to propagate and cause rupture of the uterine wall during pregnancy.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2013Date of Patent: December 1, 2015Assignee: GYRUS ACMI, INC.Inventors: Nikhil M. Murdeshwar, Jeffrey J. Nelson
