  • Publication number: 20080252182
Abstract: A system and method for controlling a power output of an auxiliary alternator of a diesel powered system having at least one diesel-fueled power generating unit, the alternator powering at least one dynamoelectric device of the diesel powered system. The system includes an alternator coupled to the diesel-fueled power generating unit having a wound rotor for supplying electrical power to at least one dynamoelectric device of the diesel powered system. The system also includes a controller for determining a desired operating frequency of the dynamoelectric device and providing a control signal for producing the desired operating frequency. The system further includes a regulator for providing a rotor control output responsive to the control signal to control an electrical condition of the rotor for adjusting the electrical power supplied to the dynamoelectric device effective to produce the desired operating frequency.

  • Patent number: 7285926
Abstract: A traction control system for controlling an electric traction motor drivingly coupled to a wheel of a tractive vehicle. The traction control system includes means for determining speed of the wheel, means for determining tractive effort of the wheel and a control circuitry for controlling drive signals to the motor based upon the wheel speed and tractive effort.

  • Patent number: 6532405
Abstract: An exemplary embodiment of the invention is a method for detecting a potentially locked axle on a vehicle propelled by an AC motor. The method includes conducting a speed test by estimating axle speed and comparing estimated axle speed to measured vehicle speed. The existence of a potential locked axle condition is determined based on the comparing of estimated axle speed to measured vehicle speed. Additional tests are disclosed for determining a potential locked axle condition and a sensor fault condition.

  • Patent number: 6499815
Abstract: The system and method maximize available rail adhesion between the rails of a track and the wheels of a rail vehicle so that the vehicle is better able to accelerate up to operating speed and to decelerate to a stop condition under poor rail conditions. The system implements a control logic function which relies on a measured variable that is different than the controlled error signal utilized to affect control of the vehicle. The control system is enabled based on creep speed while the parameter used to effect control is wheel acceleration.

  • Patent number: 6104148
Abstract: A processor system and method are provided for providing motor excitation frequency control in a vehicle propelled by AC electric traction motors. The processor system and method allow for computing an excitation frequency signal based on a sum of i) a signal indicative of a weighted average of an estimated rotor speed signal and a measured vehicle speed signal and ii) a compensated slip command signal. Effective wheel slip control is thus provided without requiring sensors for measuring rotational speed of the traction motors.
