  • Patent number: 4964922
Abstract: Grain-oriented silicon steel having an insulation coating such as a forsterite layer on its outer surface, on which is scribed by a low pressure abrasion technique a predetermined pattern of stripes to expose the metal substrate, in a manner that little or no effect will be experienced with respect to magnetic properties, but will constitute essential preparation for improvement in properties when chemical treatment of the exposed metal stripes is performed.

  • Patent number: 4911766
Abstract: A method is provided for refining the magnetic domain wall spacing of grain-oriented silicon steel having a forsterite base coating thereon by removing portions of the base coating to expose a pattern of the underlying silicon steel, providing the exposed silicon steel with an environment selected from the group of phosphorus and phosphorus-bearing compounds, and then annealing the exposed steel, which is free of thermal and plastic stresses, in the phosphorus environment in a reducing atmosphere to produce in the steel a line of permanent bodies containing a phosphorus-bearing compound to effect heat resistant domain refinement and reduced core loss.A semi-finished sheet product of final texture annealed grain-oriented silicon steel is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4904314
Abstract: A method is provided for domain refinement of final texture annealed grain-oriented silicon steels by applying to the base coating a barrier coating for sealing the forsterite, removing portions of the base coating to expose a pattern of the underlying silicon steel, applying a metallic contaminant to the steel at least in the areas of the exposed steel which is free of thermal and plastic stresses, and thereafter annealing the steel having the barrier coating and contaminant thereon at time and temperature in a reducing atmosphere to diffuse sufficient and controlled amounts of the metallic contaminant and an element from the barrier coating into the exposed steel to produce a permanent pore to effect heat resistant domain refinement and reduced core loss.
