Abstract: A system (10) for providing rail wheel truing recommendations based on rail wheel measurements includes an input device (11) for inputting information into the system. The system also includes a processor (12) receiving measured rail wheel dimensions (14) for respective wheels of a rail vehicle from the input device and a memory (16) in communication with the processor for storing a rule base (18) comprising rules for performing rail wheel truing. The system further includes logic (20) executable by the processor for accessing the rule base stored in memory, for identifying wheels requiring truing according to the rules in the rule base, and for making wheel truing recommendations according to the rules in the rule base.

Abstract: A railroad wheel reference groove locating gauge for determining a measurement of an annular reference groove machined in a face of a railroad wheel spaced radially outwardly from an axle on which the wheel is mounted a predetermined distance indicative of the wheel diameter, with the measurement being taken while the wheel remains connected to the axle, the gauge comprising an elongate member having a first end and a second end, indicia on the elongate member at the first end thereof indicative of a length along the elongate member; and an attachment element at the second end of the elongate member for detachably securing the gauge relative to an axis of rotation of the axle, with the elongate member extending radially to the first end thereof adjacent the reference groove on the wheel for enabling the use of the indicia to determine the diameter of the reference groove.

Abstract: A method of determining a remaining service life for a rail wheel (18) of a railway vehicle using an electronic rail wheel (18) wear gauge (10) mountable on the rail wheel for measuring at least one rail wheel dimension. The method includes measuring a rail wheel dimension and processing the measured wheel dimension relative to an allowable wear dimension. The method also includes accessing a historical wheel wear rate database (44) relating to the rail wheel and predicting a remaining service life of the wheel based on the historical wheel wear rate data and the processed wheel dimension.
