Patent number: 8231549Abstract: A sampling device for sampling body fluid includes a lancet for making an incision, a capillary tube for drawing-up body fluid from the incision, and a test strip affixed to an upper end of the capillary tube for receiving the fluid. An absorbent pad can be disposed between the test strip and capillary tube for spreading-out the fluid being transferred to the test strip. An on-site analyzer such as an optical analyzer and/or an electrochemical analyzer can be mounted in the device for analyzing the fluid. Alternatively, a test strip can be slid through a slot formed in the bottom end of the device so that by passing the device against the skin after an incision has been formed, the test strip will directly contact body fluid emanating from the incision.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2010Date of Patent: July 31, 2012Assignee: Roche Diagnostics Operations, Inc.Inventors: Joel S. Douglas, Jeffrey N. Roe, Ryszard Radwanski, Brent G. Duchon

Publication number: 20110275916Abstract: A control solution packet for calibrating a bodily fluid sampling device includes a container, a control solution pressurized within the container, and a membrane for covering and sealing the container. The control solution can be pressurized before or during calibration so as to ensure the appropriate amount of control solution is delivered to the bodily fluid sampling device. The control solution is manufactured to have a viscosity that controls delivery of the control solution to the device. The membrane is permeable by a piercing device of the bodily fluid sampling device and seals around the piercing device during calibration. In another aspect, the container is in the form of a capsule or dosing attachment that contains the control solution along with a sponge-like material.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 15, 2005Publication date: November 10, 2011Inventors: Jeffrey N. Patent number: 8016775Abstract: An integrated lancing test strip includes a pair of blade members that each have a lancing tip that are configured to lance skin. A pair of spacer members connect the blade members together such that the blade members define an internal capillary. A test strip is positioned along the internal capillary, and the test strip is configured to test analyte levels in the bodily fluid. During use, the lancing tips form one or more incisions in the skin. The fluid from the incisions is drawn via capillary action through the internal capillary and onto the test strip.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2009Date of Patent: September 13, 2011Assignee: Roche Diagnostics Operations, Inc.Inventors: Steven N. Roe, Jeffrey N. Roe

Patent number: 7961326Abstract: A system and method is provided for detecting concentration of an analyte in a fluid. The method comprises detecting an optical property of a first region of two or more regions in a system, the first region located in a container having a reservoir for one or more modifiers of one or more optical properties of the first region. The movement of the one or more modifiers is responsive to changes in concentration of the analyte. A next step detects an optical property of a second region of the two or more regions in the system, the second region located in a container having a reservoir for one or more modifiers of one or more optical properties of the second region. The movement of the one or more modifiers is responsive to changes in concentration of a compound, where the compound is something other than the analyte.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2008Date of Patent: June 14, 2011Assignee: Palo Alto Research Center IncorporatedInventors: Joerg Martini, Richard H. Bruce, Francisco E. Torres, Peter Kiesel, Michael I. Recht, Jeffrey N. Roe

Patent number: 7901363Abstract: A device for sampling body fluid includes a housing having a sleeve at a forward end thereof which is displaceable in response to being pressed against a user's skin to trigger the firing of a lancet. After the lancet is removed from the incision, the sleeve is repeatedly pressed against the skin to depress a ring of body tissue in surrounding relationship to the incision to express body fluid outwardly through the incision. A pusher member is then actuated to push a capillary tube through a front end of the housing for drawing-in body fluid. The lancet is a disposable lancet which includes a body supporting a skin-lancing member and the capillary tube. The disposable lancet passes through an upper end of a lancet carrier when being installed or removed. The device cannot be armed until the disposable lancet is installed in the housing, because the capillary tube functions to push a safety device to a non-safety position.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2004Date of Patent: March 8, 2011Assignee: Roche Diagnostics Operations, Inc.Inventors: Brent G. Duchon, Joel S. Douglas, Jeffrey N. Roe, Ryszard Radwanski, Andrew M. Drexler

Publication number: 20110046515Abstract: A sample of a body fluid such as blood or interstitial fluid is obtained from a body by lancing a portion of a user's skin, preferably in an area other than a finger tip, to form an incision. After the needle has been removed from the incision, a force is applied to depress the skin in a manner forming a ring of depressed body tissue in surrounding relationship to the incision, causing the incision to bulge and the sides of the incision to open, whereby body fluid is forced out through the opening of the incision. A stimulator member is mounted to an end of a lancet-carrying housing for applying the force. The stimulator member can be movable relative to the housing, and can be either heated or vibrated to promote movement of the body fluid.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 3, 2010Publication date: February 24, 2011Inventors: Joel S. Douglas, Jeffrey N. Roe, Henry M. Grage

Publication number: 20100331731Abstract: A device and method for lancing a patient, virtually simultaneously producing and collecting a small fluid sample from a body. The device comprises a blood collection system including a lancing needle, drive mechanism, kneading or vibration mechanism, optional suction system, and sample ejection mechanism. The device is preferably sized to be hand-held in one hand and operable with one hand. The device can optionally contain integral testing or analysis component for receiving the sample and providing testing or analysis indication or readout for the user. In one configuration, the lancing needle may be withdrawn very slightly from the point of maximum penetration to create an opening in which blood can pool before being suctioned through to device.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 29, 2010Publication date: December 30, 2010Inventors: Joel S. Douglas, Jeffrey N. Roe, Ryszard Radwanski, Henry M. Grage, Michael S. Sanchez

Patent number: 7766845Abstract: A body fluid testing device includes a test strip, an incision forming member, and a housing. The test strip includes an expression surface. In addition, the test strip is attached to the housing to form a cavity, and the cavity slidably receives the incision forming member. The body fluid testing device is positioned over the incision site where the incision forming member makes an incision. The user presses the expression surface against the skin to express body fluid. The cavity collects body fluid via capillary action, and the test strip analyzes the body fluid.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2004Date of Patent: August 3, 2010Assignee: Roche Diagnostics Operations, Inc.Inventors: Detlef Thym, Jeffrey N.
