    Abstract: Functionalized alumina particles, methods for making them, and compositions containing them are provided. The particles include alumina particles that have been surface treated with at least one acid of the formula A-R-Q, wherein A is SO3H, PO3H2, or PO2H2, R is an organic connecting group, and Q is a reactive moiety such as OH, NH2, vinyl, acryloxy, methacryloxy, NCO, CO2H, SH, or epoxy. The particles may be incorporated into polymer matrices to form composite materials having superior mechanical performance properties.
