  • Patent number: 5532303
Abstract: The presence of ammonium halide in a PVC composition along with conventional primary heat stabilizers enhances the heat stability during the early stages of extrusion into pipe and other articles of manufacture. The ammonium halide which is formed as a by-product of the reaction of a metal halide such as zinc chloride or an organotin chloride with a mercaptoester in the presence of ammonia or an amine may be left in the product or a separate source of the ammonium halide may be used to provide the enhanced heat stability.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 27, 1995
Date of Patent: July 2, 1996
    Assignee: Morton International, Inc.
Inventors: George F. Beekman, Gary M. Conroy, Jeffrey R. Hyde, Gene K. Norris

  • Patent number: 4873005
Abstract: Extrusion lubricants for poly (vinyl halide) resins are provided which comprise a mixture of:(a) hydrocarbon wax; and(b) Group II metal or lead salt of a fatty acid in relative amounts sufficient to produce a composition having a viscosity in excess of about 10,000 cps at 125.degree. C.; and(c) an organic mercaptan capable of reducing the viscosity of said mixture in an amount at least sufficient to reduce the viscosity of said mixture below about 10,000 cps at 125.degree. C.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 14, 1987

  • Patent number: 4824583
Abstract: A lubricating composition for PVC or the like is provided by partially saponifying a triglyceride material, such as an animal tallow, with calcium hydroxide in the presence of at least about 10% water. The minor amount of oxidized polyethylene admixed with the saponified material maintains the resulting soap and esters in a homogeneous lubricating compositions. The lubricating compositions are particularly suitable for preparing rigid resin compositions.

  • Patent number: 4810736
Abstract: Compositions comprising the combination of an organotin mercaptide and a polyformal of a dithiodiglycol are useful for stabilizing halogen-containing organic polymers against the deteriorative effects of heat, light and weathering.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4731403
Abstract: Lubricants used in forming halogen-containing thermoplastic resin compositions are addition products of mercaptans and olefins and contain at least one free carboxyl group. Of particular interest are addition products of thio carboxylic acids and long chain alpha-olefins. These lubricants are used in amounts of from about 0.05 to about 5 parts per 100 parts of thermoplastic resin composition.

  • Patent number: 4719022
Abstract: Oils derived essentially from petroleum and which are liquids at ambient room temperature and meet a certain molecular weight/percent paraffin content parameter may be used as the only necessary external lubricants for rigid vinyl halide resin compositions when said oils are added to the resin compositions in sufficient quantity to permit satisfactory molding and extrusion of the resulting resin compositions. Such oils may also be employed to form liquid lubricating and stabilizing compositions for rigid vinyl halide resin formulations which lubricating and stabilizing compositions are liquids at ambient room temperature or at temperature of about 50.degree. C. or less. Rigid resin compositions containing such oils and/or liquid lubricating and stabilizing compositions are readily prepared and easily processed.
