  • Patent number: 6084583
Abstract: A method for providing for an advertising screen saver is disclosed. At least one video advertisement is stored at a location in a telephone network. If there is no activity at a video telephone with an associated display, a video advertisement is sent to the video telephone. The video advertisement is then displayed on a dark background on the display, wherein the video advertisement is smaller than a display area of the display. The video advertisement is then periodically moved to different locations in the display area.

  • Patent number: 6052439
Abstract: A local loop access network providing high-speed access at a committed data delivery rate and natural language processing of spoken directory assistance queries. A user's spoken natural language query is processed and a directory assistance database is searched at the network server platform based on the contents of the query. Search results are provided to the user either through an audio interface or as text on a screen. The user is provided with the option of obtaining more information about certain listings and may select a listing to be automatically dialed. Search results are prioritized based on any listings previously selected to be automatically dialed and based on the geographical proximity between the establishments in the results list and the address from which the directory assistance query was initiated.

  • Patent number: 6044403
Abstract: A new architecture capable of utilizing the existing twisted pair interface between the customer services equipment and the local office is used to provide a vast array of new services to customers. Using an intelligent services director (ISD) at the customer services equipment and a facilities management platform (FMP) at the local office, new services such as simultaneous, multiple calls (voice analog or digital), facsimile, Internet traffic and other data can be transmitted over the existing single twisted pair using xDSL transmission schemes. New services such as the implementation of Internet connectivity, videophone, utility metering, broadcasting, multicasting, bill viewing, information pushing in response to a user profile, directory look-up and other services can be implemented via a network server platform via this architecture.

  • Patent number: 5949474
Abstract: A videophone with selective privacy control of a caller's transmitted image. The videophone has a shutter in front of the lens, and an actuator for moving the shutter to selectively cover or uncover the lens at the option of the local caller. A video indicator also may be included, which separately indicates that the shutter is open. The video indicator (which may be an LED) may be located adjacent the lens so that it is visible when the shutter is open, and is covered by the shutter when the shutter is closed. Alternatively, the videophone makes use of a visual signal (such as an icon) which is displayed when the shutter is closed, separately or in combination with a video indicator which indicates that the shutter is open.

  • Patent number: 5887392
Abstract: A jambliner having a multi-part design includes a sash-engaging member defining a track and a pair of retaining arms extending from the sash-engaging member defining a channel. A resilient seal for biasing the jambliner against a window sash and sealing the jambliner against a jamb includes an elongated bulb having a spline of a shape corresponding to the shape of the channel. The resilient seal is removably attached to the sash-engaging portion through the mating of the spline and the retaining arms to form a dove-tail joint. The jambliner of the present invention facilitates replacement of the resilient seal after jambliner installation, as well as customization of the compression characteristics of the resilient seal to achieve specific biasing and sealing needs.

  • Patent number: 5590496
Abstract: A foldable shipping cover nailing fin for use with a frame assembly, including a window, door, or other such assembly. The shipping cover nailing fin includes an L-shaped flange-like member which includes an integrally formed insertion leg. The flange-like member is flexibly adjoined to a second member by a hinge mechanism. The hinge mechanism permits the flange-like member to rotate into contact with the second member. In this position, the insertion leg may be inserted into a nailing fin kerf formed in the frame assembly, thereby locking the shipping cover nailing fin to the frame assembly in the folded position.

  • Patent number: 5550898
Abstract: A microcell unit, in a cellular telephone system using digital signal processing BSs, is digitally connected to a macrocell, via a metallic link, such as a twisted pair. The microcell includes a plurality of radio channel units (RCU), to provide voice connectivity to mobile subscribers (MS), which are under control of a radio control complex (RCC) located in the macrocell. Several time slots of the macrocell TDM bus, through which the RCC exerts control of the RCUs, are remoted to the microcell thereby enabling control of the RCUs at the microcell location by the RCC of the macrocell. This remoting action is achieved, via a remote time division multiplex (TDM) circuit pack which enables the RCC to communicate with the RCUs as if they were located within the macrocell.
