  • Publication number: 20110108130
Abstract: A pressure regulator valve has a housing that defines a fluid passage and a flat seat disposed around an opening of the fluid passage and exit ports. A pin with a raised conforming elastomeric embossment that contacts the seat when the valve is closed is axially disposed in the housing. The pin is biased to maintain the elastomeric embossment in contact with the seat to maintain the valve closed and control an opening pressure of the valve. Flow of fluid through and out of the pressure regulator valve housing is controlled through adjustment of a level of this biasing. The fluid flows across the flat seat and between the flat seat and the embossment when the valve is open in such a manner that the flow is generally laminar and such that the valve minimizes pressure gain at the onset of flow.

  • Publication number: 20070138917
Abstract: Composite materials comprising ferroelastic ceramic particulates dispersed in a metal matrix are capable of vibration damping. When the ferroelastic ceramic particulates are subjected to stress, such as the cyclic stress experienced during vibration of the material, internal stresses in the ceramic cause the material to deform via twinning, domain rotation or domain motion thereby dissipating the vibrational energy. The ferroelastic ceramic particulates may also act as reinforcements to improve the mechanical properties of the composites. The composite materials may be used in various structural components in vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft, buildings and tools.

  • Patent number: 7114344
Abstract: An air conditioner service fitting is provided and includes a valve body comprising a threaded bore and an annular valve seat extending around the bore. The valve body is configured and the valve seat is positioned such that all fluid that passes through the bore crosses the valve seat. A twist-to-open valve is disposed in the bore and threadedly engages with the valve body. The twist-to-open valve includes a valve element configured to form a polymer-to-metal seal with the valve seat. The polymer-to-metal seal stops substantially all fluid flow through the bore and the flow path when the twist-to-open valve is closed. The valve body further includes an external connection feature disposed around the bore. The valve body comprises an external sealing surface.

  • Publication number: 20050178437
Abstract: A pressure relief valve includes a valve insert having an opening at a first end and a pathway extending towards the opening from a second end of the valve insert. An adjustment member is received within in the opening of the valve insert. The valve insert and the adjustment member define a chamber adjacent the pathway. The adjustment member includes a throughway. A bearing element is within the chamber and adjacent the pathway. A width of the bearing element is larger than a width of the pathway. A spring is within the chamber and is under compression and in line with the bearing element. A cushioning member surrounds the valve insert and allows the flow of pressurized fluid. The spring exerts a force on the bearing element such that the bearing element is biased against the pathway and forms a seal between the chamber and the pathway.

  • Publication number: 20050160794
Abstract: Apparatus and method for container leak detection employs a tank of liquid and a conveyor assembly with a drive therefor to convey containers through the tank beneath the surface of the liquid. A light source illuminates the liquid in an observation region. At least on optical detector has a view line across the tank to monitor for bubbles of a selected size. A contrasting background may be used to enhance detection, and magnetic devices may be used to hold the containers on the advance portion of the conveyor. The optical detector in the exemplary embodiments is a imaging processor. Access doors are provided to permit removal of leaking container upon its detection. The system may be automated with controls to stop the conveyor upon detection of a leaking container and to generate an alarm. The method involves the steps performed by this apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20050073222
Abstract: Composite materials comprising piezoelectric ceramic particulates dispersed in a metal matrix are capable of vibration damping. When the piezoelectric ceramic particulates are subjected to strain, such as the strain experienced during vibration of the material, they generate an electrical voltage that is converted into Joule heat in the surrounding metal matrix, thereby dissipating the vibrational energy. The piezoelectric ceramic particulates may also act as reinforcements to improve the mechanical properties of the composites. The composite materials may be used in various structural components in vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft, buildings and tools.

  • Patent number: 6708716
Abstract: A valve assembly includes a valve body having a passageway and first and second oppositely facing valve seats that extend around the passageway. First and second valve elements are positioned in the passageway to seal against the respective valve seats, and a spring biases the first valve element to the closed position against the first valve seat. The valve seats are spaced sufficiently closely together along the passageway that the first valve element, when positioned against the first valve seat, holds the second valve element away from the second valve seat. For this reason, the spring also biases the second valve element away from the second valve seat.
