  • Patent number: 8372084
Abstract: A system for replacing a natural nuclear disc in an intervertebral space has a spinal device configured for placement in the intervertebral space. An insertion tool is configured for holding the spinal device while the spinal device is inserted into the intervertebral space. A gripping member of the insertion tool has an end for adjustably holding the spinal device within the intervertebral space. A steering actuator of the insertion tool is operably connected to the spinal device and configured for pivoting the adjustably held spinal device within the intervertebral space while the steering actuator is controlled remotely from the intervertebral space. The steering actuator is rotatable about a longitudinal axis of the tool. A locking mechanism is provided to keep the spinal device from pivoting in an insertion position and to keep the disc device from being released unintentionally.

  • Publication number: 20080045955
Abstract: A spinal fixation system is provided that includes a coupling member and a locking device that is operable to fix an elongate member in the coupling member. There is also provided insertion instruments configured to install and remove various components of the spinal fixation system. In one form, the coupling member includes opposing side wall portions having a resilient portion on at least one of the side wall portions that cooperates with the locking device for being inserted into the coupling member via resilient flexing of the resilient portion. The coupling member and locking device also preferably include cooperating structure therebetween to define a plurality of distinct positions of the locking device in the coupling member.

  • Publication number: 20080039860
Abstract: An insertion instrument for inserting an implant in an intervertebral space is provided. The instrument includes an elongate shaft having proximate and distal ends with a longitudinal axis therebetween. On the distal end of the elongate shaft is a gripping device capable of shifting from a holding configuration for securing a portion of the implant relative the distal end and a releasing configuration to permit removal of the implant portion from the elongate shaft. The instrument includes a handle configured to be held with a generally neutral wrist position to permit comfortable use of the instrument. The instrument also includes an actuating mechanism coupled between the gripping device and the handle that is operable to configure the gripping device in the holding configuration upon an initial actuation thereof and the releasing configuration upon a subsequent actuation thereof.

  • Publication number: 20070135029
Abstract: A drywall sander includes a replaceable sanding pad having a layer of resilient material, and an abrasive surface. The sanding pad includes one or more edge portions that project beyond the edges of a sander head. The edges of the sanding pad can be deformed during use when the sander is used in a corner or the like to thereby prevent scuffing or other damage to adjacent orthogonal surfaces.

  • Publication number: 20060089651
Abstract: An apparatus for advancing surgical devices such as spinal rods is disclosed. The spinal rod may be advanced, for instance, into a seated engagement with a surgical fixture, such as a fixture having a screw mounted in a bone portion, and the fixture may have an open end forming a yoke into which the spinal rod is seated. The apparatus may include portions which secure to the yoke in a pre-determined arrangement or orientation, and the portions may be locked into place by a series of linkages on the apparatus. The apparatus may include a movable member that is non-rotatably shifted longitudinally for advancing the spinal rod into the seated engagement, and the movable member may then be rotated without shifting longitudinally to rotate a securing member such as a cap into a position within the yoke to at least partially capture the cap therein.

  • Publication number: 20050043730
Abstract: A bone fixation apparatus and method are provided that allow a user to push bone pins into engagement with bones with more precision and accurate feel as to proper engagement and the clamping forces between the pins and bone over prior devices utilizing applicator guns and the like. Fine tuning of the clamping forces is also contemplated. Compact and highly ergonomic bone fixators are provided which allow the user to remain close to the pin application site during clamping of the pins onto the bone. Significant flexiblity is preferably incorporated by having two adjustably connected positioner bodies which can each mount a pin holder module releasably attached thereto. A fixation system with improved rigidity is also provided by way of independent clamping members for each of a pair of rod mounts on each pin positioner.
