Patent number: 10430419Abstract: To suggest new connections to a user of a social networking system, the system generates a set of candidate users to whom the user has not already formed a connection. The system determines the likelihood that the user will connect to each candidate user if suggested to do so, and it also computes the value to the social networking system if the user does connect to the candidate user. Then, the system computes an expected value score for each candidate user based on the corresponding likelihood and the value. The candidate users are ranked and the suggestions are provided to the user based on the candidate users' expected value scores. The social networking system can suggest other actions to a user in addition to forming a new connection with other users.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2013Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignee: Facebook, Inc.Inventors: James H. Patent number: 9177291Abstract: In one embodiment, a social networking system, in response to receiving an action request from a user, expands the portion of a social networking web site with which the user interacted to initiate the action request, and populates the expanded portion with object suggestions of the same type as the target object of the action request. In particular embodiments, the object suggestions are based at least in part on the characteristics of the target object of the action request. Such embodiments capitalize on the transitory mood of the user and facilitate and promote the chaining of subsequent action requests.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2012Date of Patent: November 3, 2015Assignee: Facebook, Inc.Inventors: Peter Henry Martinazzi, Simon Jack Bond, Naomi Gleit, Jennifer Burge, Ziqing Mao

Patent number: 9032306Abstract: Method or system for allowing a social networking system to retain users of a social networking system by identifying low-activity users who are likely to become inactive/dormant users and prompting users to initiate interactions with the low-activity users. The low-activity users are identified by monitoring activities and interactions of the users via the social networking system. If the pattern of activities and interactions satisfy one or more criteria, a computer device for providing the social networking system initiates an intervention scheme where users are induced to initiate interactions with the low-activity users. In response to the interactions, the low-activity users are likely to resume interactions via the social networking system.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2013Date of Patent: May 12, 2015Assignee: Facebook, Inc.Inventors: James H.
