  • Patent number: 11674117
Abstract: The present invention relates to a starter culture comprising at least two Streptococcus thermophilus strains, wherein a first and a second Streptococcus thermophilus strain are chosen from RGP group 1, RGP group 2, RGP group 3 and RGP group 4, with the proviso that the first and second Streptococcus thermophilus strains do not belong to the same RGP group.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 14, 2017
Date of Patent: June 13, 2023
    Assignee: DSM IP ASSETS B.V.
Inventors: Roelof Hendrik Matthijs Kouwen, Douwe Van Sinderen, Brian McDonnell, Pieter Emiel Verloren Van Themaat, Jennifer Mahony
  • Patent number: 10538818
Abstract: A kit useful for determining the phage susceptibility of one or more strains of Lactococcus lactis is described. The disclosure also describes methods for formulation of mixed defined starter cultures using strains from different phage sensitivity groups.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 13, 2014
Date of Patent: January 21, 2020
    Assignee: DSM IP ASSETS B.V.
Inventors: Douwe Van Sinderen, Finn Vogensen, Jennifer Mahony, Witold Kot, Stuart Ainsworth
  • Patent number: 10519519
Abstract: Bacteriophage Insensitive Mutants (BIMs) of three Streptococcus thermophilus parent strains were generated and characterized for phage sensitivity, sedimentation rate, cell chain length, phage adsorption and CRISPR loci alterations. Several BIMs showed an altered sedimentation phenotype as well as an increase cell chain length, reduced phage sensitivity, reduced phage adsorption and 100% identity in three CRISPR loci. The results show that the derived BIMs have become phage-resistant through a mechanism other than CRISPR.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 2, 2018
Date of Patent: December 31, 2019
    Assignee: DSM IP ASSETS B.V.
Inventors: Roelof Hendrik Matthijs Kouwen, Pim Van Hee, Douwe Van Sinderen, Brian McDonnell, Jennifer Mahony

  • Patent number: 10244771
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for the construction of a bacteriophage-insensitive mutant of a Streptococcus thermophilus parent strain whereby the bacteriophage insensitivity is not based on the CRISPR resistance mechanism but based on another mechanism. The method provides a protocol by which this can be achieved by inactivating one or more of the CRISPR systems present in a given strain. The invention also provides the bacteriophage-insensitive mutants as well as their use in a process for making a dairy product.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 23, 2015
Date of Patent: April 2, 2019
    Assignee: DSM IP ASSETS B.V.
Inventors: Roelof Hendrik Matthijs Kouwen, Laurens Leendert Hanemaaijer, Douwe Van Sinderen, Brian McDonnell, Jennifer Mahony
