  • Patent number: 4397685
Abstract: Low alloy steel having an ultra low carbon content is produced using the basic oxygen process wherein an inert gas is introduced into the melt when the melt has a carbon content below about 0.06 weight percent, the oxygen flowrate is adjusted to from 10 to 40 percent of the inert gas flow rate and the oxygen lance height is reduced to from 30 to 60 percent of the normal lance height.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 26, 1982
Date of Patent: August 9, 1983
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
Inventors: Wayne J. Maddever, Michael T. Burns, Jennings B. Lewis
  • Patent number: 4373949
Abstract: A method for increasing the life of the refractory lining of a basic-refractory-lined vessel for the production of steel by blowing oxygen into a ferrous melt from above the surface of the melt, comprising:(a) introducing into the vessel slag forming ingredients, including dolomitic lime, such that the amount of dolomitic lime exceeds the amount normally used, and(b) introducing inert gas into the melt in such manner as to cause intensive interaction between the slag and the melt. The preferred inert gas is argon.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 21, 1981
Date of Patent: February 15, 1983
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
Inventors: Jerry V. Spruell, Jennings B. Lewis, III
  • Patent number: 4210442
Abstract: Slopping of emulsion from the mouth of a basic oxygen refining vessel is prevented during oxygen refining by introducing inert gas into the vessel when slopping is imminent or has begun. The preferred method is to inject argon in admixture with oxygen through the oxygen lance at a flow rate of from 5 to 30 percent of the oxygen flow rate.
