Abstract: The present invention relates to the use of potassium-binding agents that are formulated to remove toxins, e.g., potassium ions, from the gastrointestinal tract at an elevated rate, without causing undesirable side effects, in hemodialysis patients. The compositions exhibit desired characteristics for the long term administration to treat or prevent the relapse or occurrence of certain conditions, for example hyperkalemia.
