  • Patent number: 7930265
Abstract: Automigration mechanisms having fuzzy-logic based automigration control mechanisms for implementing control schemes controlling start, stop and/or bandwidth of the automigration process are provided. The automigration control mechanisms read, into a memory of an automigration controller circuit, configuration parameters characterizing the hardware and software properties of the source storage and target storage, and that of the network connection between them. The mechanisms further derive fuzzy variables from the values of the input variables and of the configuration parameters. The mechanisms further provide a predetermined fuzzy function with the fuzzy variables, where the fuzzy function reflects the exhaustion level of the source executing the fuzzy function yielding a fuzzy result value. The mechanisms apply the fuzzy result value to one of the control schemes, yielding a control result. The mechanisms control the start, stop, and/or bandwidth of the automigration of data by aid of the control result.

  • Patent number: 7752206
Abstract: Managing a mass storage system that comprises a first and second storage space. A file index is generated listing each file along with a first characteristic quantity (FCQ), a second characteristic quantity (SCQ), and status information. Status information specifies if the file is held on the first or second storage space. A sample of files is selected from the file index containing a given number of files, wherein status information of each file specifies the first storage space. The FCQ of each file in the sample is used to determine the first critical value (FCV). The SCQ of each file in the sample is used to determine the second critical value (SCV). A first subset of files comprising each file where FCQ is larger than FCV, SCQ is larger than SCV, and specified by status information to be held on the first storage device is determined.

  • Patent number: 7693884
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and data processing system of managing a storage system, wherein the storage system comprises a first storage space and a second storage space, wherein the first storage space comprises a plurality of files, wherein for each file of said plurality of files at least one attribute is specified, and wherein a policy is assigned to each attribute. The method comprises the steps of determining a policy-specific probability distribution for each policy and of determining a policy-specific probability for each file by use of the policy-specific probability distribution. The method further comprises the step of determining a total probability for each file by use of each policy-specific probability and of moving each file of the plurality of files having a total probability equal to 1 from the first storage space to the second storage space.

  • Publication number: 20070180001
Abstract: A method for managing a mass storage system wherein the mass storage system comprises a first storage space and a second storage space. A file index is generated which lists in a uniformly distributed way each file along with a first characteristic quantity, a second characteristic quantity, and a status information, wherein the status information specifies if the file is held on the first storage space or on the second storage space. A sample of files is selected from the file index. The sample of files contains a given number of files, wherein the status information of each file of the given number of files specifies the file to be held on the first storage space. The first critical value is determined by use of the first characteristic quantity of each file comprised in the sample of files and a second critical value is determined by use of the second characteristic quantity of each file of the sample of files.
