  • Patent number: 8844283
Abstract: An exhaust-gas turbocharger is embodied with a bypass valve which is disposed in a bypass duct of a turbine between an exhaust-gas pressure line and an outlet cross section of the turbine of the exhaust-gas turbocharger and which is connected to an actuating device for controlling the throughput of exhaust-gas through the bypass duct. Through the bypass valve, a partial flow of the exhaust-gas can be guided past the turbine on demand. The bypass valve has a valve head and a valve stem. The bypass valve is axially movably held with the valve stem. The valve head, in a closed state of the bypass valve, can be placed against a valve seat in order to close the bypass duct in a gas-tight and pressure-tight manner. The side of the valve head that is connected to the valve stem faces the exhaust-gas pressure line.

  • Patent number: 8662036
Abstract: A method for operating an internal combustion engine includes controlling a variable valve drive for at least one intake valve and at least one exhaust valve of at least one working cylinder of an internal combustion engine in dependence on operating states of the internal combustion engine. The valve drive is variable with regard to valve control times and/or a valve lift. The operating states of the internal combustion engine are defined by load demands, rotational speeds, load conditions and/or torque conditions. Valve operating states of the variable valve drive are set in dependence on the operating states of the internal combustion engine. The valve operating states can increase a charge of a working cylinder, provide an overlap of opening times of intake and exhaust valves, minimize fuel consumption or operate an intake valve in an expansion mode or according to a Miller/Atkinson process.

  • Patent number: 8051842
Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes an intake manifold in a fresh air system. The intake manifold opens into inlet ports of a cylinder head. An exhaust-gas turbocharger has a turbine and a compressor, which is driven by the turbine. The turbine is disposed in the exhaust-gas system. The compressor is disposed in the fresh air system. The turbine has a turbine wheel and a wastegate channel configured to allow a bypassing flow of exhaust-gas past the turbine wheel of the turbine. A wastegate valve is disposed in the wastegate channel for selectively opening and closing the wastegate channel. An electric actuator is provided for operating the wastegate valve. A charge-air cooler is disposed, downstream of the compressor, in the fresh air system. The charge-air cooler is integrated into the intake manifold and is embodied with a water-cooled heat exchanger.

  • Publication number: 20100132355
Abstract: An internal combustion engine, in particular an Otto-cycle engine, has an exhaust gas turbocharger and a mechanical charger, wherein a compressor of the exhaust gas turbo charger is disposed upstream of the mechanical charger in the air channel for combustion air such that the compressor of the exhaust gas turbocharger draws combustion air directly from an air filter. A first charge air cooler is disposed downstream of the compressor of the exhaust gas turbocharger and upstream of the mechanical charger. A second charge air cooler is disposed downstream of the mechanical charger. The first charge air cooler, the second charge air cooler, the mechanical charger, and an intake manifold are all arranged in a single charge air cooling module, wherein direct fuel injection into the combustion chambers of the internal combustion engine is provided for supplying fuel.
