    Abstract: Halogenomethylketones are prepared from nitro compounds by treating the latter in alcoholic solution with sodium alkoxide or potassium alkoxide, cooling to a temperature in the range -10.degree. to -100.degree. C. and then allowing the mixture to react with ozone at -10.degree. to -100.degree. C. The process is particularly suitable for the preparation of 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone from 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-nitropropane.
