    Abstract: A battery module with a battery cell stack which is formed from a plurality of battery cells, with deformable foam plates which are arranged between in each case adjacent battery cells for the compensation of deformations of the battery cells during their charging and discharging or on account of their aging. A cooling medium is conducted between respective adjacent battery cells in order to cool the battery cells. The cooling medium is a cooling liquid which makes direct contact with the battery cells. A cooling structure for conducting the cooling liquid to the battery cell and along the latter is arranged between the respective battery cell and the foam plate which faces it. The foam plate makes contact with the cooling structure, and the cooling structure making contact with the battery cell.

The housing includes at least a first housing element and a second housing element. The first housing element and the second housing element are fixedly connected to each other. The first housing element and the second housing element each include a base surface and two lateral surfaces. The base surface is arranged between the lateral surfaces. A first distance by which the lateral surfaces extends away from the base surface is greater than a second distance by which the lateral surfaces are spaced apart from each other. The base surface and the lateral surfaces of the first housing element have the same dimensions as the base surface and the lateral surfaces of the second housing element.

Each electrical machine (11, 12) has a converter (15, 16) coupled to the respective electrical machine (1, 12) by a plug connection (19, 20), and the electrical energy storage (13) has a converter (14) coupled to the converter (15, 16) of the electrical machine (11, 12) by a plug connection (18). The plug connections (18, 19, 20) are connected firs in a high-voltage circuit and second in a protective circuit. The plug connections (18, 19, 20) are automatically disconnected from the high voltage when the protective circuit is interrupted.
