  • Publication number: 20140024798
Abstract: A polycondensation reaction mixture is disclosed which includes a catalyst, acyclic esters, ethylene glycol, and water. The catalyst is a titanium atrane. The polycondensation reaction mixture is prepared by the steps of (a) contacting a solution comprising a titanium (IV) alkoxide compound and a first solvent with an organic acid; (b) contacting the solution formed in step (a) with a substituted or unsubstituted trialkanolamine to form an impure catalyst; (c) purifying the impure catalyst to form the titanium atrane catalyst; and (d) bringing the catalyst into contact with the acyclic esters under conditions that produce the ethylene glycol and water.

  • Patent number: 8440782
Abstract: Method for producing polyesters using titanium atrane catalysts is disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for making the titanium atrane catalysts. The titanium atrane catalysts are useful as esterification and/or polycondensation catalysts, have similar activity, color and byproduct formation as conventional catalyst systems, but with reduced toxicity and regulatory concerns.

  • Publication number: 20060079395
Abstract: The invention concerns new catalyst systems for the synthesis of polyesters, for instance for the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate and its copolyesters. The catalyst system according to the invention consists of an antimony or germanium compound, a heterogeneous catalyst component and an ester of phosphoric acid or of phosphorous acid as stabilizer. The polycondensation rate both in the liquid phase and in solid phase polycondensation (solid state) can be increased by 30-100 percent with the smallest additions of the heterogeneous component.

  • Publication number: 20050159515
Abstract: This invention relates to polyester materials such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and products such as bottles, containers, films and sheets made therefrom. The invention includes the use of certain “enaminones” including a preferred class of heterocyclic compounds which are present during melt processing of such polyester materials in order to reduce the content of actealdehyde (AA).

  • Patent number: 6828272
Abstract: The invention pertains to new catalyst systems for polycondensation reactions, for example for producing polyethylene terephthalate. In accordance with the invention, complex compounds with hydrotalcite-analogous structures of general formula [M(II)1−xM(III)x(OH)2]x+(An−x/n).mH2O are used, wherein M(II) represents divalent metals, preferably Mg or Zn or NI or Cu or Fe(II) or Co, and M(III) represents trivalent metals, for example Al or Fe(III), and A represents anions, preferably carbonates or borates. These catalysts can be calcinated and can be used in combination with phosphorus compounds that contain at least one hydrolyzable phosphorus-oxygen bond.

  • Patent number: 6515080
Abstract: The invention relates to a process to produce polyethylene terephthalate modified with o-phthalic acid units while avoiding any high phthalic acid losses during esterification or polycondensation and while maintaining the favorable use properties effected by the phthalic acid. According to the present invention, a precondensate made of phthalic anhydride and ethylene glycol in a non-catalytic reaction is added in the esterification and/or polycondensation stages, whereby the ethylene glycol is used at a molar excess of 2 to 3.5 relative to the phthalic anhydride.
