    Abstract: Mechanisms for controlling lighting activation by taking into account proximity and motion data are disclosed. Controllers can have cosmetic and/or functional lighting that can be controlled by proximity detectors and/or motion detectors, and such lighting can vary in color, intensity, and/or pattern. Proximity detectors can use capacitance, lighting, and/or sound data to determine the proximity of objects to the controllers, and motion detectors can use accelerometers and/or gyroscopes to determine the motion of such controllers. Additionally, controllers can start radio frequency communications with gaming consoles based on proximity and/or motion data. One benefit of such proximity and/or motion light control is battery conservation.

    Abstract: A computer input device controller dynamically adjusts the rate at which an illumination source is activated, and may also adjust the rate at which other optical tracking system components are activated. As the velocity of optical tracking system movement relative to a tracked surface increases, the controller increases the activation rate(s). As the velocity of relative movement decreases, the controller decreases the activation rate(s). Future displacements of a tracking system relative to a tracked surface are also estimated. In particular, relative tracking system/tracked surface velocity is calculated based on a series of images. Relative displacement is then estimated based on the calculated velocity.

    Abstract: A data input device for use with a tracking surface having light-scattering properties with respect to the device is disclosed. The device comprises a coherent light source for projecting a coherent light beam onto the tracking surface. The tracking surface scatters the coherent light beam striking the tracking surface. The device further comprises a detector associated with the coherent light source for detecting at least a portion of the scattered light. The detected portion of the scattered light comprising a speckle pattern. The device further comprises a controller configured to respond to the detected speckle pattern and operate the device in one of a tracking mode and a non-tracking mode, depending upon a speckle size characteristic of the detected speckle pattern as determined by the controller.
