Patent number: 10733589Abstract: A point-of-sale (POS) device includes a processor, a battery, a transaction object reader, a printer with a printer controller, and optionally a temperature sensor. The processor determines a present power discharge capability rate of the battery, optionally based on a temperature measured by the temperature sensor. The processor also calculates a first estimated power draw rate based on a first setting value for at least one of the components of the POS device, such as the printer. If the first estimated power draw rate is dangerously close to the present power discharge capability rate of the battery, a second estimated power draw rate is calculated based on a second setting value for the one or more components. If the second estimated power draw rate is no longer dangerously close to the present power discharge capability rate of the battery, the components are set to the second settings value.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2017Date of Patent: August 4, 2020Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Cory Douthat, Jeremy Wade, Matthew H. Publication number: 20200202357Abstract: A payment processing device can implement a monitoring system to detect for tamper attempts at a chip card interface. The monitoring system can establish a baseline when no chip card is present in the chip card interface, or in some embodiments, when it is known that an authentic chip card 14 is present in the slot 21. During subsequent evaluations of the chip card interface by the monitoring system, a response received by the monitoring system that deviates from the baseline can indicate that a tamper attempt at the chip card interface may have occurred. If a tamper attempt is determined by the monitoring system, a remedial or corrective action can be taken.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 5, 2020Publication date: June 25, 2020Applicant: Square, Inc.Inventors: Afshin Rezayee, Malcolm Smith, Yue Yang, Jeremy Wade, Max Guise, Kamran Sharifi

Patent number: 10410202Abstract: An expedited booting process with brownout detection for a payment reader is provided. The payment reader can execute a boot sequence from read only memory at startup. A check is made of a stored flag value to determine whether a value such as a flag indicates whether or not a prior execution of the boot sequence was successful. If the last execution of the boot sequence was successful, the boot sequence can be executed at a faster clock rate. Otherwise the boot sequence is executed at a slower clock rate. An evaluation can be made to determine whether a predetermined portion of the boot sequence has been surpassed. If the predetermined portion of the boot sequence has been surpassed, the flag value can be set to indicate a successful execution of the boot sequence and the general operating instructions for the payment reader are then executed.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2016Date of Patent: September 10, 2019Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Kevin Ka Wai Ng, Malcolm Smith, Afshin Rezayee, Yue Yang, Jeremy Wade

Patent number: 10282552Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for protecting electronic devices from security breaches (e.g., in the form of DPA attacks) by managing input/output (I/O) pin states. The technique is particularly useful in financial applications in which data security related operations, such as those involving cryptography, are performed by payment card readers, and the power supplied to drive the operations are measured and analyzed by attackers to extract sensitive information. The technique prevents any external device from measuring the operation power by disabling the I/O pins. The I/O pins are set to a logic low at any given time a data security related operation is performed. As a result, no communication with the external environment is possible during the data security operation, and external power measurements by DPAs are prevented.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2017Date of Patent: May 7, 2019Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventor: Jeremy Wade

Patent number: 10255590Abstract: A payment terminal has a clock management unit for providing clock signals to components of the payment terminal. The payment terminal also has a wireless communication interface for communicating wireless signals. A processing unit of the payment terminal may monitor clock signals provided by the clock management unit and determine a phase and frequency difference between a clock signal provided to a component producing RF noise and a clock signal provided to a wireless communication interface of the payment terminal. When RF noise present in the received wireless signal falls below a threshold, the processing unit may sample the received wireless signal.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2017Date of Patent: April 9, 2019Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Jeremy Wade, Afshin Rezayee
