Patent number: 9950822Abstract: A column of cups guided by their rims in elongated slots is spaced into desired cup pitch by one or more linear stars from which the cups can be transferred for packaging. The linear stars have lugs engaging and spacing the cups. In another aspect of the invention, cups are manipulated into patterns for final grouping and packaging and by a plurality of cup orienting pickers engaging, inverting and re-orienting the cups. In one final packaged cup group of two or more layers, alternating cups in each layer are inverted and a top lid of a cup in an upper layer is disposed on a top lid of a cup in a bottom layer, while a bottom of a cup in an upper layer is disposed on a bottom of a cup in a lower layer, and in an alternating pattern.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2017Date of Patent: April 24, 2018Assignee: R.A. Patent number: 7766153Abstract: Trays are indexed at predetermined pitch on a tray conveyor. As the trays are conveyed, a turning guide engages a leading tray portion, turning the tray and urging it transversely downward and/or into buckets on an adjacent bucket conveyor or cartons on an adjacent carton conveyor. A cam is disposed rearward of each tray on the tray conveyors and the turning trays pivot about that cam. A hold-down prevents trays climbing over the turning guide. Pressure relief and tray indexing are provided upstream of the tray conveyor. Apparatus and methods are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2008Date of Patent: August 3, 2010Assignee: R.A. Jones & Co. Inc.Inventors: Jerome Brugger, Matthew R. Lukes

Publication number: 20090097953Abstract: A device for operating on a package includes a housing having a portion adapted to be coupled to the package, and a fan coupled to the housing for generating a vacuum within the housing to selectively retain or release the package relative to the housing. A method of operating on the package includes decreasing a distance between the housing and the package, actuating the fan coupled to the housing to generate a vacuum therein, retaining the package relative to the housing using the vacuum generated by the fan, and releasing the vacuum in the housing to release the package relative to the housing.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 11, 2008Publication date: April 16, 2009Applicant: R.A. Publication number: 20070289255Abstract: An apparatus for transferring and reorienting an item for packaging into a carton includes a body having a first end and a second end and a channel formed in the body. The channel defines a channel axis extending between the first and second ends and is configured to receive the item at the first end when the item is in a first angular orientation. The channel is configured to deliver the item at the second end in a second angular orientation relative to the channel axis that is different from the first angular orientation. The channel may include a helical groove extending between the first and second ends and formed in a wall of the channel which operates as a track for rotating the item as it moves between the first and second ends. A method of packaging an item includes transporting an item through the apparatus so as to orient the item relative to the carton.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 8, 2007Publication date: December 20, 2007Applicant: R.A. JONES & CO., INC.Inventor: Jerome Brugger

Patent number: 5687551Abstract: A pouch filling apparatus for filling pouches with product as the pouches travel around a filler wheel includes a hopper wheel carrying a plurality of hoppers over a sector of the filler wheel empty of pouches. The filler wheel carries a plurality of product dispensing units having an upper accumulation chamber. The hopper wheel and the filler wheel counter-rotate in timed relation so that individual product dispensing units and hoppers cross paths at a product transfer station to allow product to be dropped from a hopper into the accumulation chamber of a product dispensing unit. The filler wheel then rotates to a filling station and the product is released from the accumulation chamber into a pouch travelling along the pouch conveyor.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1994Date of Patent: November 18, 1997Assignee: R. A. Jones & Co. Inc.Inventors: Steven F. Mustain, Joseph D. Greenwell, Jerome Brugger, Michael E. Myers, Richard A. Schaeffer
