Patent number: 7059555Abstract: A tape reel assembly for a data storage tape cartridge is described. The tape reel assembly has a hub. The hub includes a cylindrical core, an annular arm, and a web. The cylindrical core defines a drive side and a top side. The annular arm is co-axially disposed exterior to and separated from the cylindrical core. Additionally, the annular arm defines a tape winding surface bisected by a center line into a top half opposite the drive side and a bottom half adjacent the drive side. The web extends from the top side of the core, and a web center connects to the annular arm at a point in the top half.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2003Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: Jerome D. Brown, Jerry L. Alexander, Dean E. Sitz, Peter A. Ridl, Michael E. Reard

Patent number: 7051970Abstract: A tape drive system is disclosed. The tape drive system includes at least one tape reel assembly, a storage tape, and at least one pack arm assembly. The tape reel assembly includes a hub defining a tape winding surface about which is wound the storage tape. The pack arm assembly is disposed adjacent the tape reel assembly and includes a pack arm and a pin. The pack arm defines a guide defining a pivot end and has at least one flexible flange cantilevered from a side of the guide. The pin is coupled to the tape drive system. In this regard, the pack arm is slidingly coupled to the pin and configured to follow the wound storage tape by moving axially relative to the hub and radially about the pivot end.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2004Date of Patent: May 30, 2006Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: Raul Andruet, Albena V. Patent number: 6915982Abstract: A single reel data storage tape cartridge is described that includes a housing having a tape access window. A single tape reel assembly is rotatably disposed within the housing and includes a hub about which a storage tape is wrapped. A tape guide is disposed within the housing adjacent the single tape reel assembly, opposite the tape access window, and is configured to define a pathway of the storage tape from the single tape reel assembly to the tape access window and limit lateral motion of the storage tape.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2003Date of Patent: July 12, 2005Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: Michael A. Mewes, Michael E. Reard, Jerome D. Brown, G. Phillip Rambosek, Geoffrey A. Lauinger, James L. Albrecht

Publication number: 20040238671Abstract: A tape guide for use in a tape transport system, such as a data storage tape cartridge or a tape drive. The storage tape extends from the tape reel along a tape path that includes the tape guide. In this regard, the tape guide includes a tape contact face and at least one guide flange. Extension of the guide flange relative to the tape contact face defines an angle of not less than 90°. With this configuration, an edge of the storage tape is directed to move along the guide flange with lateral tape movement so as to minimize the opportunity for micro-buckling. In one preferred embodiment, a portion of the guide flange is curved.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 2, 2003Publication date: December 2, 2004Inventors: Jerome D. Brown, Michael A. Mewes, James L. Albrecht, Geoffrey A. Lauinger, Christopher J. Zwettler

Patent number: 6698675Abstract: A leader block assembly including a leader block, a tape clamp, and an elastomeric member. The leader block forms a channel defined by opposing sidewalls extending from a base, each sidewall forming a lip having an under surface. The tape clamp is nested within the channel and includes a bottom surface, opposing sides, and at least one cantilevered leg positioned at each of the opposing sides, respectively. Each leg extends upwardly relative to the bottom surface. The elastomeric member is disposed between the leader block and the tape clamp, and biases the tape clamp to a locked position in which the legs engage the under surface of the respect lips providing positive engagement between the tape clamp and the leader block.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2001Date of Patent: March 2, 2004Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: Jerome D. Brown, Dean E. Sitz, Jerry L. Alexander, Arne B. Boberg
