  • Patent number: 4880193
Abstract: A swing arm lamp has the swing arms thereof connected to each other through a swivel assembly that includes a first swivel element and a second swivel element all disposed and interconnected so as to rotate with respect to each other about an axis of rotation through the swivel assembly, but so that relative sliding movement along the axis of rotation of the elements with respect to each other is substantially prevented and so that the relative rotation is limited to just about 360 degrees. The swivel elements are formed of tubular stock with one element having a reduced outer diameter at one end thereof, having a circumferential groove formed about such reduced outer diameter, and having a stop extending therefrom. The reduced outer diameter end portion of the one swivel element, in turn, seats in an enlarged inner diameter end portion of the other swivel elements. First and second lugs are formed from the material of such other swivel element by displacing the wall thereof in a swaging process.

  • Patent number: 4842231
Abstract: An adjustable friction mounting for lamps which typically includes an elongated fitting body having a through passage. The passage is cylindrical and has an inwardly-extending terminal circular shoulder at one end, and an outwardly-extending threaded circular recess at the other end, the recess being of greater diameter than the through passage. A flexible resilient inner sleeve or bushing is provided within the passage. The sleeve or bushing is split longitudinally and is disposed coaxially within the through passage. The sleeve or bushing is compressible in service, so that its circumferential dimension may be decreased. An externally threaded ring having an inner face at an angle in the range of 40 to 50 degrees at one end, and relative to its axis, is provided.

  • Patent number: 4726552
Abstract: A swing arm lamp has the swing arms thereof connected to each other through a swivel assembly that includes a pair of end swivel elements and a center swivel element all disposed proximate each other and interconnected so as to rotate with respect to each other about an axis of rotation through the swivel assembly, but so that relative sliding movement along the axis of rotation of the elements with respect to each other is substantially prevented. The elements are formed of tubular stock with the center element having reduced outer diameter at each end thereof and having a circumferential groove formed about each such reduced outer diameter. The reduced outer diameter end portions of the center element, in turn, seat respectively in enlarged inner diameter end portions of the end elements. A lug is formed from the material of each such end element by displacing the wall thereof in a swaging process.

  • Patent number: 4582445
Abstract: A pair of joint halves each include substantially cylindrical joint portions and end portions. Aligned openings are formed through the joint portions to receive therethrough a connecting pin which connects the joint halves together into a articulable joint. The connecting pin includes teeth on its outer surface sized to mate with teeth formed in the aligned openings of the joint halves. The connecting pin has a locked condition wherein its teeth mate with the teeth of both the joint halves and thus prevent relative rotation thereof, and an unlocked condition wherein its teeth are not in mating engagement with the teeth of one of the joint halves thus permitting relative rotation of one joint half with respect to the other. In one embodiment a spring urges the connecting pin into its locked condition and an operating button, disposed at one end of the connecting pin, facilitates movement of the pin so that its teeth move out of mating engagement with the teeth on one of the joint halves.

  • Patent number: 4554620
Abstract: A first support arm section is hingedly connected to a second support arm section to form therewith a light source support arm which can be selectively articulated into either an extended or a folded over disposition. A first end of the support arm is formed for connection to a lamp support post and base; while a second end of the support arm is formed to support a light source such as a bulb socket and a lamp shade. The first support arm section and second support arm section are each formed of tubular stock to facilitate electrical wiring and a spring has its ends connected to adjacent hinged portions of the first and second support arm sections to surround hide and protect the electrical wiring and to bias the first and second support arm sections towards each other. In the extended disposition the support arm sections are coaxially aligned and carry a light source so that the illumination is directed downwardly.

  • Patent number: 4548446
Abstract: A first substantially hollow, substantially hemispherical joint half is disposed adjacent a second substantially hollow substantially hemispherical joint half to form therewith a substantially spherical articulable joint. A tapered opening extends through the first joint half to receive the tapered end of a connecting pin and provide a frictional contact fit therewith. Spline like teeth are formed on the internal surface of an opening extending through said second joint half to receive spline like teeth also formed on said connecting pin to provide a sliding but not rotative fit therewith. A threaded fastener, received through said second opening and into the respective end of the connecting pin means when turned in a first predetermined direction draws in the connecting pin means to draw the joint halves together and provide a strong articulable joint with each half capable of rotating with respect to the other half about an axis through the connecting pin means.

  • Patent number: 4484255
Abstract: A swing arm support housing is formed with a pair of openings spaced one from the other but each formed along parallel axis. One opening extends into but not through the housing and is on a size and configuration to be mounted on top of a lamp support post. The other opening extends completely through the housing and is fitted proximate each of its ends with aligned rings formed of a plastic material and retained in place by end rings. The aligned rings slidably and rotatably receive a lamp swing arm. At least one of such rings constitutes a clamping ring that has a longitudinal slit to permit distortion of the ring, proximate the slit and in a radial direction, to clamp same against the lamp swing arm to hold the swing arm in selected positions.

  • Patent number: 4473874
Abstract: The swing unit, for mounting the swing arm assembly of a swing arm lamp, is formed as a relatively short substantially tubular member having a truncated hemispherical top and a tubular mounting end of reduced outside diameter and that is provided with a circumferential groove. The reduced end of the swing unit is received by the mounting seat of a support unit which mounts same for rotation about a predetermined axis of rotation. A threaded bolt like member is carried by the support unit so that an end of the threaded member can be moved from a position with its end projecting into the groove, to prevent unseating of the swing unit from the support, but not so as to prevent rotation thereon; to a position with its end removed from the groove so that the swing unit can be removed from the support. A threaded opening in the truncated section of the top receives the threaded end of a tubular swing arm of the swing arm assembly along a line which is at an angle of 45.degree.
