  • Patent number: 6976651
Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and method for transferring tissue reels. The system preferably incorporates nozzles that spray an adhesive directly onto moving tissue paper substrate, as opposed to applying adhesive directly to the reel, independent of machine speeds and basis weights of the substrate. Alternatively, the system of the present invention may also apply adhesive directly to the new reel as opposed to the tissue paper substrate. In the preferred embodiment, the new core or reel is brought up to substantially equivalent speed as the moving tissue paper substrate and placed into contact with the moving web of tissue. When the new reel is in place, the valves are activated thereby spraying adhesive across the width of moving tissue. The newly coated substrate sticks substantially immediately to the new core and cleanly tears away from the completed roll.

  • Publication number: 20050226584
Abstract: A method for the direct measurement of large strains in ropes in situ using a plastic optical fiber, for example, perfluorocarbon or polymethyl methacrylate and Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer or other light time-of-flight measurement instrumentation. Protective sheaths and guides are incorporated to protect the plastic optical fiber. In one embodiment, a small rope is braided around the plastic optical fiber to impose lateral compressive forces to restrain the plastic optical fiber from slipping and thus experience the same strain as the rope. Methods are described for making reflective interfaces along the length of the plastic optical fiber and to provide the capability to measure strain within discrete segments of the rope. Interpretation of the data allows one to calculate the accumulated strain at any point in time and to determine if the rope has experienced local damage.

  • Publication number: 20050121094
Abstract: A spoolable composite tube capable of being spooled onto a reel for storage and for use in oil field applications. The spoolable tube exhibits unique anistropic characteristics that provide improved burst and collapse pressures, increased tensile strength, compression strength, and load carrying capacity, while still remaining sufficiently bendable to be spooled onto a reel in an open bore configuration. The spoolable composite tube can include an inner liner, an interface layer, fiber composite layers, a pressure barrier layer, and an outer protective layer. The fiber composite layers can have a unique triaxial braid structure.

  • Patent number: 6846495
Abstract: The present invention pertains to compositions having improved delivery of pharmaceutical actives. These compositions comprise pharmaceutical actives in an anhydrous solvent. These compositions may take the form of liquid elixirs placed into the mouth and eventually swallowed, or can be delivered via liquid-filled drops, metered liquid dosing devices, atomizers and liquid-releasing, edible capsules.

  • Patent number: 6820182
Abstract: A memory exhaustion condition is handled in a data processing system having first and second regions of physical memory. The memory exhaustion condition is detected while the second region is mirroring at least part of the first region. In response to the memory exhaustion condition, memory mirroring is at least partially deactivated and at least part of the second region is utilized to augment the first region, such that the memory exhaustion condition is eliminated. In an illustrative embodiment, the data processing system compresses real memory into the first region of physical memory, and the memory exhaustion condition arises when the first region lacks sufficient available capacity to accommodate current requirements for real memory. The memory exhaustion condition is eliminated by compressing at least part of the real memory into the second region.

  • Patent number: 6775647
Abstract: A method and system estimates manufacturing costs for conventional and advanced materials and processes based on a process-oriented approach. A computer system comprises an input display for selecting one or more designs and one or more design parameters. Cost models are based upon process-oriented manufacturing cost estimates for a plurality of designs utilizing materials and manufacturing of processes. Software is programmed to receive selected designs and selected design parameters from the input display and pass the selected designs and design parameters to the cost models. An output display shows the manufacturing costs estimated by the cost models for the selected designs and design parameters. A manufacturing process flow simulation model highlights and quantifies the magnitude of the manufacturing process cost drivers.

  • Patent number: 6719820
Abstract: A filter retaining apparatus and method for installing a thicker filter in an existing conventional return air duct in a conventional heating and air conditioning system. The filter is commercially available but is thicker than one conventionally used in such systems. A thicker filter provides more efficient air filtration and has a longer life, thus, requires less frequent cleaning or replacement. The retaining apparatus is capable of retaining the thicker filter and is adaptable to the existing return air duct opening without modification of the existing opening or the grill cover. The apparatus has the same length and width dimensions as the existing thin filter and is mounted on the same landing surface. The greater depth of the apparatus extends into the air duct. Thus, from the room interior it is not possible to detect the use of the apparatus. The greater depth of the apparatus retains the thicker commercially available filter.
