Patent number: 5108030Abstract: A sleeve-type article carrier and a blank for forming the same. The end panels of the carrier comprise overlapping end flaps which overlie dust flaps such that a single stripe of adhesive can be used to adhere the overlapping end flap to the overlapped end flap and to the underlying dust flaps. The end flaps and dust flaps are dimensioned so that the blank can be die cut from a web of no greater width than is used in producing blanks of conventional design.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1991Date of Patent: April 28, 1992Assignee: Riverwood International CorporationInventors: Richard L. Schuster, Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 5072876Abstract: An article carrier having handle openings in the end panels. Handle openings are provided in end panel flaps connected to the top panel. The end panel flaps overlie a second layer of material also containing handle openings so that the handle openings in the end panel flaps are aligned with the handle openings in the second layer, thus providing handle openings of double thickness. The second layer may be a flap connected to an inner top panel layer underlying the top panel or it may comprise end panel flaps connected to the side panels.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1990Date of Patent: December 17, 1991Assignee: Riverwood International CorporationInventor: Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 4901849Abstract: A wrap-around article carrier having end panels foldably connected to tuck flaps for holding the end panels in position. A center gradually triangular tuck flap is foldably connected to the top panel and to two generally triangular tuck flaps. The fold lines connecting the end tuck flaps to the center tuck flap contain cutouts, one edge of which comprises part of an edge of the center tuck flap and overlies the top of an article in the carrier to lock the tuck flaps and the end panels in place. The other cutout edge comprises part of an edge of the end tuck flaps and is positioned to contact the side of an article to stabilize the structure.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1988Date of Patent: February 20, 1990Assignee: Manville CorporationInventor: Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 4830267Abstract: A wrap-around carrier for transporting a plurality of beverage containers and including a drop-down partition for separating containers is provided with an improved, handle reinforcement section to provide at least double ply thickness in all areas surrounding the handle openings.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1987Date of Patent: May 16, 1989Assignee: Manville CorporationInventor: Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 4804089Abstract: A paperboard wrap-around article carrier which has end panels foldably connected to the top panel and to gusset panels. The gusset panels allow the end panels to be folded and maintained in a substantially vertical position. The end panels extend beyond the lowermost ends of the gusset panels so that the foldable connections between the gusset panels and the end panels is minimal, thus minimizing the cumulative memory of the fibers in the foldable connections to prevent the forces generated by the memory from unfolding the end panels and snapping them up out of place.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1987Date of Patent: February 14, 1989Assignee: Manville CorporationInventor: Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 4706876Abstract: A sleeve-type beverage can carrier having a transversely arranged handle opening in the top panel. The opening is covered by flaps foldably connected to the top panel along the transversely extending elongated edges of the handle opening, each flap being formed of individual tabs which facilitate the folding down of the flap by the fingers of a user. The elongated edges are tapered so that they are the most widely spaced apart midway along their length and the closest together near their ends. This arrangement causes the top panel on both sides of the handle opening to bow upwardly when the carrier is lifted to distribute the lifting stresses through the top panel and the upper portions of the side panels.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1986Date of Patent: November 17, 1987Assignee: Manville CorporationInventor: Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 4702375Abstract: A wrap-around bottle carrier wherein the bottle heel cutouts at the ends of the carrier are spaced from the ends a greater distance than normal to increase the strength of the carrier at this area of stress. To permit this arrangement to be used, the shape of the outer or end cutouts is altered by connecting the top of the cutout to the vertical inner side portion of the cutout by a straight cut rather than by the usual curved cut. This allows the edges of the end cutouts to contact the bottles when the carrier is lifted even though, due to the change in dimensions of the end cutouts, the end cutouts are not symmetrically arranged with respect to the centerline of their associated bottles.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1985Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Assignee: Manville CorporationInventor: Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 4685566Abstract: A sleeve-type beverage can carrier having end dust flaps which mechanically interlock by means of locking tabs and cutouts. The flap containing the cutouts overlaps the flap containing the locking tabs so that the cutouts and tabs are aligned. The locking tab is folded back to allow the flap with the cutouts to be moved into place, then is inserted through the cutout and also through the portion of the bottom flap from which the locking tab was struck. This provides a secure mechanical lock. In addition, the blank from which the carrier is formed is designed so that the space between dust flaps is identical in shape to that of the dust flaps. This allows multiple widths of blanks to be cut from the sheet stock without scrap loss.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1985Date of Patent: August 11, 1987Assignee: Manville Sales CorporationInventor: Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 4679725Abstract: A wrap-around sleeve style carrier is provided with end panel punch style tabs designed to interlock the end panels and to prevent the accidental interlocking of the carrier with adjacent carriers or objects.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1986Date of Patent: July 14, 1987Assignee: Manville Sales CorporationInventor: Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 4637515Abstract: A wrap-around article carrier with a handle portion bounded by spaced slits extending across the width of the top panel. The fingers and thumb are intended to be inserted beneath the slits. Upon lifting the carrier, the handle portion adjacent the slits folds upwardly about a score line in the handle portion, directing the stresses caused by the lifting force outwardly to the side panels. This arrangement makes it more convenient to lift the carrier and strengthens the handle portion.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1985Date of Patent: January 20, 1987Assignee: Manville Sales CorporationInventors: Jerry F. Wilson, Richard L. Schuster

Patent number: 4153158Abstract: A foldable basket-type carrier suitable for holding twelve bottles has longitudinal partition panels connected between end wall panels on both sides of central panel and handle means thereof. Transverse partitions extend in opposite directions from the longitudinal partition panels to the side wall panels and to the central panel means completing the division of the carrier into twelve article receiving cells, two rows of three receiving cells being provided on each side of and parallel to the central panel and handle means.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1978Date of Patent: May 8, 1979Assignee: Olinkraft, Inc.Inventors: Earl J. Graser, Jerry F. Wilson

Patent number: 4032053Abstract: A wrap-around type article carrier has removable tear-away panels formed in its top panel so that access may be had to the carrier contents, while a handle is formed between the tear-away panels so that the carrier can be carried after they are removed. The carrier is particularly adapted for use with returnable beverage type containers in which carrying means are necessary to return the carrier and bottles to the retailer.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1976Date of Patent: June 28, 1977Assignee: Olinkraft, Inc.Inventor: Jerry F.
