  • Publication number: 20030063966
Abstract: A data storage and retrieval system. In a preferred embodiment, the data storage and retrieval system includes a polygonal array of cells that are inwardly disposed with openings configured to receive data storage units. A first robot unit to transport a data storage unit to and from the polygonal array of cells is located within the polygonal array of cells. A second robot unit is also located within the polygonal array of cells to transport a data storage unit to and from the polygonal array of cells. The second robot unit manipulates the data storage units placed in the cylindrical array of cells independently of the first robot unit.

  • Patent number: 5526198
Abstract: The video-to-data converter buffers and converts the video data received from a camera or a conventional video tape drive into a data record format that is compatible with a computer data tape drive subsystem and its media, such as a 3480-type magnetic tape cartridge. In addition, a header is interposed between a leader portion of the magnetic tape and the remainder of the magnetic tape. This header segment contains two sections, a first of which is a data record directory that is used by the control unit to denote the location of each data record on the magnetic tape as well as administrative data associated with the data record. The second section of the header is an administrative information section that contains data relating to the magnetic tape itself.

  • Patent number: 5479097
Abstract: A tape cartridge or other physical volume includes a housing configured to accommodate magnetic data storage media, such as a reel of magnetic tape. A magnetic field detector is coupled to the housing for indicating whether the housing has been exposed to a magnetic field of sufficient intensity to corrupt or bulk erase the magnetic media. In a first embodiment, the detector is implemented as a magnetic media element having a predefined pattern of magnetic domains recorded thereon. In a second embodiment, the detector is implemented with a magnetic film element having a predefined pattern of magnetic domains recorded thereon and a polarizing filter stacked on top of the magnetic film element to polarize light incident upon the magnetic film element. Based on the Kerr effect, light incident upon the magnetic domains will undergo a shift in polarization angle before being reflected back to the polarizing filter. Erasure or alteration of the magnetic domains will modify the polarization shift.

  • Patent number: 5369532
Abstract: Control software and hardware in the tape drive control unit creates and manages a header segment at the beginning of the magnetic tape. This header segment includes an administrative information section that contains data relating to the magnetic tape itself. The administrative information includes read/write status information such as the write protect status of the magnetic tape that enables the tape drive control unit to manage the data records written onto the magnetic tape without reference to any other source of administrative data. In addition, each data record written on the magnetic tape includes a header which denotes the read/write status of the data record.

  • Patent number: 5351159
Abstract: This magnetic tape cartridge has the same exterior dimensions as a conventional 3480-type magnetic tape cartridge but houses different media. To clearly identify the media contained in the cartridge, a label receiving recess in included on the back of the cartridge. A human readable and machine readable label can be inserted into this recess to identify the media contained in this cartridge. Additional label recesses are provided juxtaposed to the media identification recess and on the top and side of the cartridge to receive user installed labels to uniquely identify the cartridge.

  • Patent number: 5251090
Abstract: The self sealing data storage element presents a uniform form factor data storage element that can be used to house any one of a plurality of types of tape media. The tape media is wound around a single reel contained within a housing of predefined external dimensions. The housing includes an opening in one corner thereof through which the tape media is extracted by an associated drive element. In order to enable the drive element to securely grasp the tape media, a leader block is affixed to the end of the tape media nearest the opening in the housing. In order to provide the self-sealing capability, a length of leader tape is provided between the leader block and tape media in order to completely encapsulate the tape media once it is wound around the reel contained within the housing. The leader block is of width at least as great as that as the tape media and preferably slightly larger in order to automatically compensate for any lack of uniformity in the winding of the tape media on the reel.

  • Patent number: 4837672
Abstract: An electronically switched power supply that automatically adjusts its operation to produce a fixed output voltage as input voltages of different magnitudes are applied at different times and which has a circuit breaker and circuit breaker control circuitry which provides circuit breaker protection at a fixed output current as the different input voltages are applied.
